26/06/2019 Special thanks to Jeremy George and the City of San Antonio Transportation and Capital Improvements Department! Round Rock Meadows Drainage Case Study by Stephanie Castillo The Meadows neighbourhood is a 200-acre City of Round Rock development along Sam Bass Road. The neighbourhood drains to Brushy Creek and experiences historic localized flooding due to limited and undersized storm water infrastructure The Problem / Driver: The City of Round Rock provided LJA with flooding reports along with photos and video evidence of historic flooding. LJA was tasked with collecting additional data via field visits and electronic downloads, creating a verified existing hydraulic model based on past data received, and designing proposed alternatives to alleviate flooding with associated costs of each alternative. 8 4
26/06/2019 Round Rock Meadows Drainage Case Study The Solution The XPStorm software allowed LJA to model localized flooding and evaluate the feasibility of flood reduction alternatives in the Meadows neighbourhood. • The XPStorm software allowed for a Dynamic Solution for multi-directional drainage patterns. We were able to connect the storm drainage system to the natural topography. • The Rain-On-Mesh feature allowed us to validate the built existing conditions model using rain gage data and historic video evidence. • XP 2D Extreme Engine allowed for faster solution times. 9 Round Rock Meadows Drainage Case Study The Result • We were able to remove structures from the floodplain • We were able to evaluate cost estimates for various flood reduction alternatives The Future • The City of Round Rock and LJA are currently building a 1D-2D Dynamic XP STORM model of the Greater Round Rock West neighbourhood. The software was chosen for its ability to model BOTH localized and riverine flooding in the area of interest. • Once complete, the existing model will be used to develop and evaluate the feasibility of flood reduction alternatives. 10 5
