  1. 2015-16 ILO ASSESSMENTS for ETHICS & VALUES and WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

  2. What We Did ü Authentic assessments ü Single essay prompt to assess both ILOs simultaneously ü Writing samples from 20 sections of 10 capstone-level courses ü Each essay was rated by two faculty members ü Standardized 3-point rubric (exemplary, acceptable, unacceptable) ü 5 criteria: thesis, content, organization, grammar, ethical values ü Results disaggregated by population group

  3. By the Numbers 381 total essays were assessed ü Benchmark: 70% of students will achieve "acceptable” or above Ethics and Values: 159 essays ü 78% "acceptable" or above 21% "exemplary" Written Communication: 345 essays ü 77% "acceptable" or above 10% "exemplary"

  4. Ethics & Values ü Taking more classes at Mission increases your likelihood of attaining an “acceptable” or above score! ü More female students received “acceptable” or above BUT more men achieved “exemplary” ü First-generation college students had more “exemplary” scores than non-first-generation.

  5. Written Communication ü Overall scores for all 4 criteria were very high. Thesis : 88% “acceptable” or above, 33% “exemplary” Content : 85% “acceptable” or above, 28% “exemplary” Organization : 87% “acceptable” or above, 32% “exemplary” Grammar : 93% “acceptable” or above, 36% “exemplary” ü Female students did well on thesis and grammar . ü Male students did well on organization and grammar but need to work on thesis . ü Both genders scored the same on content . ü Correlation between units and achievement is not as clear as for Ethics and Values.

  6. Next Steps ü The College has met the benchmark for both ILOs. ü How do we get more students to achieve an “exemplary” score? ü Was the assessment too easy? ü What can the College do as a whole and for specific groups to improve performance on these two ILOs? ü How do we address the other aspects of the Written and Oral Communication ILO? ü What trends have you noticed in your classes?
