  1. “2013 Planned Operational Evaluation of a Minimum Time Fall Haul-out Procedure” Developed by Harbour Committee Presented by Murray Woods

  2. North Bay Yacht Club – a club not a marina …the Club is formed shall be the promotion, encouragement and fostering of boating, boat racing, and aquatic sports and all legitimate activities in connection therewith, the provision of facilities for the furtherance thereof, the promotion of the best interests of the members of the Club and of friendly camaraderie among them. (Article 3) Approach Haul-out workload and cost as a club

  3. North Bay Yacht Club – a club not a marina Harbour Committee : • coordinates Launch & Haul-out activities on behalf of the members • not within the terms of reference of the Harbour Committee • delivered within a cooperative arrangement of members • works with club executive to ensure safety procedures are conveyed and enforced • reviews and develops procedures to make Launch & Haul-out more efficient given shifts in NBYC demographics • early haul-out of some members

  4. NBYC Statistics • Crane(s) costs continue to increase – Supplier and Union requirements increases challenge

  5. NBYC Statistics • Crane(s) costs continue to increase – Supplier and Union requirements increases challenge • Club membership “maturity” shifting

  6. NBYC Statistics • Crane(s) costs continue to increase – Supplier and Union requirements increases challenge • Club membership “maturity“ shifting • Length of work day for haul-out increasing

  7. Challenge To review & analyze observational and collected data on haul-out activities at the POINT to: • develop new procedures/protocols to reduce length of work day • maintain safety of all members • identify causes and impacts of delays • maintain fair haul-out cost for all members • offer financial options for members who seek more than club can afford to do during a long haul-out day

  8. Delays we can control • no sling marks • lines tangled – too short – not on boat • decks cluttered • special considerations not known – thru-hulls, extensions, etc • notification of needing a tow not known early • nobody assigned to boat • boat in the wrong slip • cradle not prepared – pads not in right position – pads frozen – pads rotten • unmarked cradle & bow – stern not identified on cradle • “fussy” owners requesting multiple adjustments

  9. Efficiencies implemented at the “point” • assignment of consistent personnel • development of a “picture book” individual boat keel type/saildrive location, etc • keel location marks painted on the cradle • ensure “level lift” from the water in the slings • ensuring trailer with cradle is positioned level through a designed plank

  12. 2013 Haul-out Trial Procedure • Each boat allotted 15 minutes at the point • from initiating slings-on to slings-off in the cradle/trailer • Timing will be conducted by Point Coordinator • Time delays not related to boat/cradle preparedness, or owner requests NOT included (i.e., delay in trailer backing in) • Total time tracked – agreed/signed-off by owner (or assigned person) • an additional lift cost of $10.00/minute for each minute over 15 minutes Clubs that Charge by the Minute Clubs that Charge by the Minute beyond Avg • Hyland Yacht Club • Cathedral Bluffs Yacht Club • Halifax Yacht Club • Club around Sarnia • Yacht Club of Lk Michigan

  13. 2013 Haul-out Trial Procedure NOT INTENDED AS A PENALTY BASED SYSTEM • incentive to have all owners properly prepare for haul-out • ensure a safer & shorter haul-out day. • allow owner’s to spend some additional time (and dollars) without guilt for special requests • procedure will be reviewed after haul-out and an evaluation of its effectiveness
