  5. 2/26/19 GRAB N’ GO BREAKFAST OPTIONS AND ENHANCING OVERALL PROGRAM PARTICIPATION Presented By: Lindsay Radzvin, MS, RD ! Evaluate Your Program: ! Begin with Electronic Surveys and gather feedback from students and community to identify barriers limiting breakfast expansion. ! Look at trends and participation in buildings. ! Meet with stakeholders and set growth goals, one or two buildings at a time ! Establish a budget to see what’s available to you financially to get an alternative breakfast model started. ! Lots and lots of grant opportunities for Alternative Breakfast Models! ! NHSD received a grant from the Allies for Children that purchased a grab n’ go cart, new technology, incentives for students, training for staff and some professional marketing pieces. ! Market your Program! ! Send out a mailing, if possible, to encourage program participation at the beginning of the school year ! Offer a free breakfast day at the beginning of the school year ! At HS level, offer a discounted coffee beverage with purchase of a breakfast 5

  6. 2/26/19 ! MAKE SURE STAFF ARE WELL TRAINED! ! Encourage staff members to learn student’s names, what activities they participate in, their food preferences, etc. ! Morning is often tough so it is imperative that staff members are pleasant and accommodating with students. ! Great customer service is vital to the success of breakfast. More Strategies: ! Update Packaging/Marketing ! Swap inexpensive paper boats for foam trays ! Display Specials/Photos on Digital Menu Boards and via Social Media ! Meet with Student Council/Student Focus Groups ! Offer Student Incentives- -Lucky Tray Days, Free Giveaways, Vouchers for Something at lunch -Partner with a vendor that you are using to Kellogg’s/General Mills to see if they’ll help with a big prize incentive ! Stay connected with kids ! ! Encourage new items with samples ! Create surveys with new items ! Follow trends of popular restaurant chains 6

KENDRA, GRADE 2 • I LIKE BREAKFAST AFTER THE BELL BECAUSE...NORMALLY I AM NOT HUNGRY WHEN I FIRST WAKE UP AND THIS GIVES ME THE CHANCE TO EAT AT SCHOOL WITHOUT BEING WORRIEDABOUT BEING LATE FOR SCHOOL. -ABBY, GRADE 4 • IF YOU GO TO BREAKFAST, MISS OUT ON MORNING THINGS. BEFORE I NEVER GOT TO PLAY BECAUSE I HAD TO GO TO BREAKFAST. LUKE, GRADE 4 STUDENT SURVEY I ADMINISTERED A STUDENT SURVEY AT THE END OF OUR PILOT PROGRAM. I ASKED STUDENTS THE QUESTION, “DO YOU HOPE THAT YOUR NEXT TEACHER ALLOWS YOU TO EAT BREAKFAST IN THE CLASSROOM?” WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? • OTHER CLASSROOMS PILOTED • APPLIED FOR STATE GRANT • 2 OF OUR 3 ELEMENTARY BUILDINGS ARE NOW BREAKFAST AFTER THE BELLSCHOOLS • INCREASED BREAKFAST PARTICIPATION BY 50% • BETTER SCHOOL COMMUNITY • CHANGED FOOD OPTIONS THIS YEAR SINCE ENTIRE SCHOOL IS BAB. 9
