WORKSHOP THEME ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 Design and construct a selling point in a street market, reusing the abandoned material of the market.

WORKSHOP THEME ECOWEEK 2011 I W13
WORKSHOP THEME ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 What we can sell? … Green Architecture!
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 STEP 1 I Mapping Why the street market? Sustainable urban ac,vity: SOCIALLY: human contact I street recovered for the pedestrian I human scale ECONOMICALLY: brings producer closer to consumer I func, onal mobility ENVIRONMENTALLY: ephemeral nature I waste management?
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 Maps and diagrams as “compressions of informa,on” The diagrams primary u,lity is as an abstract means of producing new models of organiza,on and describing poten,al rela, onships among elements.
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 Mapping the movements
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 Mapping elements and their rela,on Step 1 outcome: understanding the func,on of the street market tracing and evalua,ng possible materials to be reused
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 STEP 2 I Component From Mapping to Component logic, or How can we RE‐USE the selected materials? Input: From the Mapping process we have selected some materials and objects, used for the storage and transport of the products for sell, in the Street Market. Characteris,cs: Some can be used only once and some are to be re‐used, for the same purpose. Our inten,on: To explore, how we can RE‐USE these materials, as the basic building blocks of our selling‐point.
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 Use of design strategies: That are based on the Component logic . What components are? Components are self‐alike, related units forming a structural assembly / aggrega,on, according to their prolifera<on logic . Assembly’s varia,on: Components can locally vary some of their material characteris<cs or their form , in order to perform in ‘micro’‐local condi, ons, with the most op,mal way environmentally and spa, ally. From prolifera,on to assembly: Depending on the assembly’s prolifera,on logic, that cons<tutes the structure and also the overall form , we can strategize and op,mize the control of the performance in different environmental and spa,al ways.
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 Pre‐fixed form: Our chosen materials have a pre‐fixed form and structure . (We can preserve this form or we can de‐form / un‐fold / re‐shape it). Component Strategies 1) Prolifera<on logics based on: the elements a) Varying and changing components (genera,ve) that have embedded their ar<cula<ons b) Varying and changing components and separate ar<cula<on (as a structure) c) Pre‐fixed components and varying ar<cula<ons (if they exist as separate items)
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 1+) More On the 3 Prolifera<on logics : Where the varia<on applies in each logic. a) changing components (embedded ar<cula<ons) A form finding process that generates the whole structure and also the local environmental and spa,al performance through one type of mul,‐performing component and its assembly. b) changing components and separate ar<cula<on The ar<cula<on serves as a structural system and the component performing environmentally and spa, ally either through moving parts or by local (material‐organiza, onal) differen<a<on . c) Pre‐fixed components and varying ar<cula<ons (if any) Fixed or Pre‐fixed components that can have or reveal specific performance in some fields and an ar<cula<on system that adds performance in the rest needed fields (e.g. structure, movement and orienta<on ).
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 2) Assembly logics based on: the ar,cula,on and its ability to move a) Superimposi,on (gravita,onal or fric,onal posi,oning, no ar,cula,on)
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 b) Weaving posi,oning + gravita,onal (no ar,cula,on)
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 c) Catenary pile(gravita,onal posi,oning, no ar,cula,on)
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 d) Inverse Catenary (suspension‐bridge ar,cula,on or hanging)
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 e) Fixed by side or glued (non moving ar,cula,on)
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 f) Rigid ar,cula,on (non moving)
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 g) Moving (rigid or flexible) ar,cula,on Rigid Flexible
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 h) crimp‐fold‐anach ar,cula,on
METHODOLOGY ECOWEEK 2011 I W13 STEP 3 I BaMlefield Contemporary projects stands between opera,ve diagrams and banle maps. A banle map aims to not describe a place, but rather to begin its transforma,on. Banle map as synthesis of possible evolu, ons rather than fixed drawing. A sta,c simula,on of dynamic processes.
