Barometer Problem (Physics Story) • Physics exam problem - explain how to measure the height of a tall building using a barometer • Student Answer - tie the barometer to a string, lower it to the ground and measure the length of the string • Teacher graded wrong – physics not applied • Student protested • Given 6 min to provide better answer 5
Barometer Problem (Physics Story) • Firstly, you could take the barometer up to the roof of the skyscraper, drop it over the edge, and measure the time it takes to reach the ground. The height of the building can then be worked out from the formula H = 0.5g x t squared. But bad luck on the barometer. • Or if the sun is shining you could measure the height of the barometer, then set it on end and measure the length of its shadow. Then you measure the length of the skyscraper's shadow, and thereafter it is a simple matter of proportional arithmetic to work out the height of the skyscraper. • But if you wanted to be highly scientific about it, you could tie a short piece of string to the barometer and swing it like a pendulum, first at ground level and then on the roof of the skyscraper. The height is worked out by the difference in the gravitational restoring force T =2 pi sqr root (l /g). • Or if the skyscraper has an outside emergency staircase, it would be easier to walk up it and mark off the height of the skyscraper in barometer lengths, then add them up. • If you merely wanted to be boring and orthodox about it, of course, you could use the barometer to measure the air pressure on the roof of the skyscraper and on the ground, and convert the difference in millibars into feet to give the height of the building. – Expected answer. • Undoubtedly the best way would be to knock on the janitor's door and say to him 'If you would like a nice new barometer, I will give you this one if you tell me the height of this skyscraper‘ ; -) 6
Barometer Problem - Lessons • Try to think for yourself • There is not always necessarily a ‘best’ answer • There can be more than one solution to a problem • Solutions don’t have to be complicated • Be creative • Still, if you want to pass, give the teacher what he/she wants in the exam or test ;-) • Brain teasers... 7
ADMISSION PROCESS - PART 1 8
Overview of University Admission Process • Process varies across schools • Start as early as you want, latest grade 10 • Simple way of looking at this process: • Knowing what you want to go into • Finding universities that offer intended program (be realistic) • Look at prerequisites • Look at application requirements and deadlines 9

Choosing a Degree Program or Career • Online Resources • Resources at ALIS • Personality Inventive • Career Tests • FREE site: • Princeton Review Career Quiz, limited career selection advice • CHARGEABLE sites: • http://www.self-directed-search.com • http://www.assessment.com • It is really up to you… • But make sure you have all the facts • Ultimately you want Allah’s pleasure & to support future family 11
Admission Requirements • Universally, English 30 and Math 30 is the only general requirement. • All the other requirements are program specific. • To keep all of your options open, the minimum average you want is in the Mid 80s • If you’re looking at more prestigious or honor programs, the minimum you want is 90% 12
Registration • VERY IMPORTANT, THE EARLIER THE BETTER • Gives you chances to research on marks wanted, and so you can study harder to achieve the highest possible grade. Always aim for higher. • if asked for 70, aim for 85, 95 • Final Grades • 70% Class work • 30% Diploma Exam • Your options are even broader, apply to as many schools as you want or needed • But a fee comes with each application • Do you want to live at school on Res or home • maybe stay home for 2 years, and at school for 2 years? 13
14
