shall we dance together ? It was 10 years ago that Paul and Clément fjrst met when they were both taking part in a Thursday afternoon university workshop. It wasn’t long before the training sessions they shared went far beyond the usual academic schedule. Every last second of their free time became an opportunity for the two to share experiences. They would improvise role plays, make up their own weird and wonderful everyday signs and gestures, pushing each other to go further, honing each other’s creativity. They developed a shared vocabulary, one drawn from contemporary dance, hip hop, the world of clowns and martial arts. They created Compagnie Lève Un Peu Les Bras ! in 2010. Their fjrst choreography collaboration gave rise to the duo Lève un peu les bras !, with which they won several choreography competitions. In 2012, they created their fjrst show, the trio Avenue L. (hip hop dance) which dealt with the theme of memory. This project was co-produced and programmed by the CCN and the Créteil MAC, the Centre Chorégraphik Pôle Pik, the Val- de-Marne CDC, where it was also performed in residence as well as at the Lyon Maison de la Danse. Along every step of the way, they have forged their friendship around the movement of dance and the pleasure of co-creation. Now, 10 years later, they have decided to tell this story through WITH.
WITH you ! It’s often said that we all have plenty of friends, but that you can count the real ones on one hand. To begin with, it’s arguably all a matter of luck, simply being in the right place at the right time. But then it’s something else entirely, involving language, emotions, hopes and dreams. The relationship between these two guys developed in tandem with their choreographic journey. Primarily dealing with the pleasure of sharing, it refmects the multiple twists and turns of their everyday life where dance, travel and much more is concerned. It also embodies the pleasure of fjnding your travelling companion, someone with whom you can communicate without speaking, through laughter and body language. An accomplice who makes anything possible.
A light and vibrant style ! é How best to tell our story ? Full of amusement and off-beat charm, WITH is a story of friendship and camaraderie which champions the pleasure of dancing as a pair. Just as in a game, they amuse, challenge, confront, help and trick each other and then make amends... “And let your best be for your friend. If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its fmood also. For it is his to fjll your need, but not your emptiness. And in the sweetness of friendship, let there be laughter and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the Heart fjnds its morning and is refreshed”. Khalil Gibran, The Prophet A brief duet charged with electric pace which delivers a frenetic, physical performance with abundant humour and disarming simplicity. With spontaneity and harmony, the dancers bounce, slide and soar, creating an energetic and enthralling performance. An intense duet within an intertwining dialogue which closes just as it takes its fjrst breath. WITH is 30 minutes of dance for all, of emotion concealed by a veneer of humour.
WITH education ! a show defjned by encounters and exchange Paul and Clément are passionate about supporting and spreading ideas. They are holders of Master’s qualifjcations from STAPS faculty specialising in research and education. “For both of us it has always been a question of continuous learning. What’s more, we love thinking up situations and new means of conveying what we’ve learnt”. The educational interest WITH offers takes on various guises. Above all there’s the universal theme of friendship. What does it mean to be a friend? With all the challenges and possible variables it involves. Spatial games, ground work, laughter, disputes, reconciliation, ... There is then the choreographic element. The gestural vocabulary of the piece all ties into athletic movements. Touches of hip hop, contact dance, acrobatics, martial arts and contemporary dance can all be seen. The gestures are at one and the same time physical, theatrical and a means of communication between the dancers.
