Who are we? Born out of the multiple award winning Legal Social Mobility Partnership, SMBP is a volunteer led charity which brings together over 130 commercial organisations, law and accountancy firms and professional sports teams committed to

Born out of the multiple award winning Legal Social Mobility Partnership, SMBP is a volunteer led charity which brings together over 130 commercial organisations, law and accountancy firms and professional sports teams committed to supporting students from low income backgrounds in their pursuit of a professional career.

What do we do? • Programmes in London, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton, Reading, Glasgow, Belfast and Norwich • Four days of skills and work insight at four different high profile organisations and a day with a professional sports club learning about the psychology of resilience and goal achievement • Ongoing support via online coaching from legal professionals, accountants and business people

SMBP objectives Break down psychological ‘fitting in’ barriers students may experience when entering the • world of business by providing them with an opportunity to experience different working environments and meet the professionals within them; Develop students' commercial awareness and skills in the following areas: interviewing, • team working, relationship building, presenting, influencing, resilience, goal planning and negotiating; Arm students with multiple corporate brand names to create stand out Personal • Statements/CVs; Provide engaging business game focussed work insight experiences to create anecdotes to • enable students to confidently answer competency questions asked during university and job interviews; and Assist students with each step of their career journey through online virtual coaching on • Personal Statement/CV creation, completion of application forms and interview preparation.

  4. Why take part? Shama says of her experience: "A great programme and a fantastic opportunity for young individuals who aspire to work in the professions. It has had a big impact on my life and is something I will always refer back to. I would highly recommend this programme to my younger peers. While it is intense, it comes with so many great opportunities and it was an incredible experience that I thoroughly enjoyed." Usman says of his experience: "An incredible opportunity to get first-hand experience in the professions. Through the Scheme, I had an exceptional chance to meet the in-house teams of ITV, Barclays, Aviva and Fremantle Media thus widening my understanding of the profession. The programme has had a major effect on my life. Post Scheme I have received great support from the team in helping me with career pathways such as deciding between university and apprenticeships alongside CV building. I would recommend the programme to any young individual. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that can open many doors in the process." Kerrie says of her experience: "I am appreciative of the new opportunities that the scheme has opened up for me, and I am ready to work hard to not let this opportunity go to waste." Angelica says of her experience: "I used the experience in my personal statement and it has helped me get all my offers at University. The course has made me believe in myself and I feel so much more ambitious and confident."

Key skills the students will develop Influencing & Negotiating – students take part in team-based negotiation • exercises where they are encouraged to argue a position and persuade others in an articulate manner. • Resilience and Goal Planning – students consider goal setting and developing strategies to deal with set-backs and handling pressure. • Leadership and Teamwork – students work in teams and take numerous roles within such teams including leadership. Presentation skills – students will make individual presentations to their • peers and partners to develop preparation and oral communication skills. Building and maintaining relationships – throughout the programme the • students are encouraged to network and engage with as many people with different job types as possible. Interviewing – students will be given an insight in to what participating • organisations are looking for when interviewing prospective employees

  6. Ongoing support 1. SMBP Online Coaches will provide assistance with: • the creation of Personal Statement and CV; • completing application forms; and • preparation for interviews 2. SMBP will periodically contact you with recruitment opportunities from our participating organisations

How to get involved Our Student Sourcing Lead will work with you to: Present the programme to students and invite applications • Advise on the application process to be run locally • School appoints a coordinator to: Identify students who fulfil the SMBP eligibility criteria • Run an application process • Be point of contact for the Student Sourcing Lead •

Eligibility criteria The students who participate must be: • State School educated; and • has achieved, or is on course to achieve a minimum of BBB by end of S5, including English and Mathematics; and • Be available to attend the SMBP programme, week of 15 th June 2020 either: • first generation to attend University; or • are or have been eligible for free school meals in the last 6 years (NB FSM eligibility criteria includes benefits measure and pupil premium links back to FSM eligibility in the last 6 years); or • has received or, is eligible for an Education Maintenance Allowance; or • where the young person is, or has been a carer; or • if the young person is or has been in the care system; or • lives in a postcode with an SIMD ranking of 1-3. The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation ( https://simd.scot/2016/#/simd2016/BTTTFTT/9/-4.0000/55.9000/ ) is a tool for identifying areas of poverty and inequality across Scotland.
