When It All Falls To Pieces 21 st Century Workplace • Increased Digital Technology – Artificial Intelligence and Robotics • Frees human workers from dangerous and mundane tasks • Enables tasks humans can not easily do – delicate medical procedures • Frees humans to perform more intellectual tasks and provides strategic information/data • Following statistics are from Future of Jobs Report 2018 by World Economic Forum: • 74 million current jobs will be displaced by machines and algorithms by 2022, but 133 million new jobs will be created as well. • Division of labor in 2018 is 71% human and 29% machine, by 2025 it’s expected to be 48% human and 52% machine. • Gartner predicted that by 2022 1 in 5 employees will have AI as a coworker • Fewer than 5% of jobs will be completely automated while 60% of occupations could have as much as 30% of responsibilities automated. 4
When It All Falls To Pieces 21 st Century Workplace • Industry Disruption and Transformation – Innovators – the key businesses that used new technologies to change the world. • Amazon – created virtual retail business – Utilize AI to bring suggestions to consumers – Utilize robotics and technology to streamline processes to guarantee overnight delivery • Google – completely changed our relationship with information. – Created the concept of search engines which have completely replaced printed reference materials. – Significant use of AI • Apple Computer – iPhone, iPad, iPod – Brought mobile technology to a consumer device – Created the digital audio and video industry – Redefined mobile audio and created the podcast industry 5
When It All Falls To Pieces 21 st Century Workplace • Industry Disruption and Transformation – Disrupters – the key businesses that used new technologies to reimagine the customer experience and disrupt existing industries. • Uber – One of the first companies that used a mobile app to reimagine ride share services traditionally called taxi services. – Redefined the relationship with the customer with the Uber app to immediately contact an available service. – Redefined the relationship with the employee by creating self-employed drivers that supplied their own vehicle for passengers. – Disrupted the taxi industry • Air BnB – Created full webservice and mobile app to match homeowners with extra capacity with those seeking temporary lodging. – Redefined the solution for the customer searching for temporary lodging whether for business travel, vacations and temporary dislocation. – Disrupted the hotel industry 6

When It All Falls To Pieces 21 st Century Workplace • Work Flexibility and Independence – Digital transformation is also increasing the desires of the workforce to transform their work life balance – Work from home and other non-office locations • In 2018 approx. 26.2 million people worked from home at least part time which was 173% increase from 2005 • 69% of employees were offered work from home options • 80% of prospective employees would turn down a position if it did not offer work from home option • 57% of remote workers are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs and less stressed – Work varying hours and days to accommodate family or personal interests • Younger workers want time for family – fathers and mothers share responsibilities. • Workers want flexible work conditions to pursue hobbies, advanced education and other personal interests • Many older workers don’t want to retire yet want more time for personal interests, passion projects, time with grandchildren 8
