Purpose of the Research Design Service • The Research Design Service (RDS) helps people design and develop high quality research proposals by providing advice on research design to researchers. • They must be developing proposals for national, peer- reviewed funding competitions for applied health or social care research. • Funding stream examples: • NIHR • MRC • ESRC/EPSRC • Charities…. RDS expertise • In the North West the RDS is made up of a proportion of the time of approximately 32 senior advisers and 20 frontline advisers. • Methodology: • Statistics including trials • health economics • qualitative • health psychology & behaviour change • research synthesis • and specialist methodologies. • Social care. • Specific application advice for schemes. • Public Involvement (PI). First contact Depending on your needs you may be: • provided with information on first contact with the service • directed to our online resources for information • directed to another source of help • eligible for our advisory service if you are looking for support with proposal development to apply for funding from a national open peer-reviewed competition scheme. Individualised support • You will be asked to complete an advice request form which gathers information needed to assess your needs. • Your case will be assessed and if eligible you will be passed on to one of our ‘Case Managers.’ • As appropriate, your adviser will make contact with other advisers or seek our specialists’ advice. • Advisers will then provide the support needed to develop your proposal. The Public Involvement Fund What can it be used for? • Setting up meetings with individuals or groups of patients, carers, service users or the public • Venue hire, providing refreshments. • Must reimburse any out-of-pocket expenses incurred by members of the public such as travel, subsistence and carer costs. • May reimburse patients, carers etc. for their time. • Not for research itself. • Up to a maximum of £350 per project.
