Nine steps to living a moral life Appreciating the gift of being human- the way we respond to God Using your intellect- we can use our god given talents to make the right decisions Looking to the law to guide your freedom- we use laws to guide us onto the right path of life Imitating Jesus- Jesus is perfect and we all strive to be as much like him as possible Forming, informing and following your conscience- as humans we must develop w truthful conscience to do the right thing
Nine steps to living a moral life continued Repenting and seeking forgiveness when you sin- when we make mistakes and do the wrong thing we must be able to repent and learn from the mistake Loving God above all- exercising the virtues of faith hope and love Loving yourself- we must love ourselves by practicing humility temperance and gratitude Loving your neighbor- we do this by exercising the virtues of justice kindness and respect
Virtue Virtue- the heart of the moral life, they are healthy, good habits that help us do good and empower us to become one with god
What do virtues have to do with character? Virtues are attitudes dispositions or characteristics that let us act in ways to become closer to God. Examples of virtues: Honesty, courage, compassion, generosity, fidelity, integrity, fairness, self-control, and prudence
Theological and Cardinal virtues Theological virtues- faith hope and charity; enable us to live in communion with the holy trinity Cardinal virtues- Latin meaning "hinge"; source of all good habits
Character Character- who we really are and who we are becoming through our choices and actions A person with good moral character would be a priest or a teacher because they inspire all of us to be the best person we can be
The young rich man A good person can live morally in every aspect of their life. The point of the story with the young rich man is that God told him to sell his material things and be poor so he may be rich in heaven
Morality Morality- knowledge based on human experience reason and gods revelation 6 reasons we act morally- choosing to do the right thing even if it's the harder route, never lying, staying true to God and yourself, staying out of violence, being nice to all people and by loving others the way you would like to be loved Living a moral life is what leads to happiness because morality brings us closer to God and God is what makes us happy
