What is Debate What is Debate ● Debate is the art of arguing and presenting one’s opinion on a set issue ● Debate can be anywhere and does not have to formal. ● It can be at an actual tournament or it can even be at your lunch table!
Why Debate? Why Debate? Improves public speaking skills Helps place arguments effectively Enhances ability to think on the spot Polishes writing skills Educates how to communicate effectively Helps boost self-confidence Teaches how to defend your aspects on issues
Different Forms of Debate Different Forms of Debate Parliamentary- Three speakers on each team who argue for either the Proposition or the Opposition Public Form(PF)- Two speakers on each team who debate for either Pro or Con Lincoln Douglas(LD)- One person team and all of the topics are based on morality.
Meeting Structure Meeting Structure • Club meets Tuesdays and Fridays 2:25- 4.15pm • Coaches decide the agenda • Topic research is done in the first meeting after every tournament • Debate cases are HOMEWORK • Practice debates during meetings
What is Expected • There is a fee involved for school registration and tournament registration • A device with internet access is highly recommended • Students should bring an afterschool snack to debate meetings
Practices and Tournaments • Attend all meetings and tournaments • If you have to skip a meeting, you are REQUIRED to contact a coach with a VALID reason before you can miss it • Cases will be due at specific times, specific dates. You MUST meet the deadlines
Personal Responsibilities • Apart from the meetings at school, there will be meetings on weekends closer to the tournaments • You will have to do your own research and be able to write your own debate cases • Be proactive, a good team member, and a good club member
