Communication and Formal Education and Training opportunities in ethics • Working with our education department and St Helena Hospice to develop a local annual Advanced Communication Skills Programme to ensure all of our core MDT members are trained as per national Peer Review requirements. • Ensuring that our cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist work force undertake level 2 psychological training to support our cancer patients, their families and carers using higher level techniques • Our Macmillan Information Service is relocating to the main hospital site in February 2015 where by all ward areas will have access to trained cancer information volunteers • Providing coaching training for all of our cancer CNS’s with support from Macmillan Cancer Support • Host a ‘Cancer Conference’ in the Summer of 2015 for any staff member with the extension to our primary care colleagues. • Development of a senior cancer nursing strategy group to provide senior leadership and direction for cancer nursing across the Trust. • Develop a trust wide communication skills training programme for staff from the general wards to improve the level of skills for staff not working directly in the oncology speciality. • Work with our postgraduate medical centre to develop further programmes of education for junior medical staff in communication skills and dealing with difficult situations.
Cancer Support Group and User Engagement with existing cancer support groups • Develop a cancer user group to work in collaboration with the Trust to provide strategic direction in relation to cancer patient experience and cancer service delivery. (our first meeting is on 27 th January 2015) • Work with our Macmillan Cancer Information Service to provide a generic cancer support group which will be accessible for all cancer patient • Further development of working relationships with HealthWatch Essex to improve the User Involvement and patient experience programme .
Develop further Qualitative research programmes to better understand patients and carers lived experiences with the aim of supporting clinical teams to further develop quality improvement programmes • Work with our audit and research department to build upon our cancer research and audit profile to include robust qualitative research and analysis surrounding our cancer patient experience on an annual basis. (This will include Trust and site specific groups). • Work with the clinical teams to develop a more robust approach of gaining live cancer patient experience data.
