Working with School for your Child’s Success • Ensure punctuality and regular attendance at all official school programmes and events • Provide a quiet space and adequate time for revision and completion of school work • Be aware of your child’s timetable and his after ‐ school activities; • Encourage and support your child’s participation in CCA and school ‐ based activities while monitoring his academic learning
Working with School for your Child’s Success • Work with school to build and support your child in having good time management skills and positive learning habits • Help your child prioritise his time among his activities; and limit your child’s time on the computer and handphone. • Work closely together with teachers to support your child’s learning and development. Build Positive Learning Habits Before a lesson : • Be prepared. Look through the chapter to be covered and get a rough idea of the important concepts. • Highlight the terms that are unfamiliar. Clarify them in class. During a lesson : • Listen attentively and Take notes. Taking notes forces one to listen carefully and allows for retention of information better. Helps in review and revision too! • Clarify doubts ‐ any terms or concepts or questions
Build Positive Learning Habits After a lesson : • Review ‐ Revise by the end of the day, Revise again at the end of the week and again at the end of the month. Helps to store the info in the longer term memory. • Clean up notes and add in the details. • File notes for easy retrieval later.
The Curve of Forgetting
Starting Time of School • Music cue at 7.15am: A signal for all to stop all activities, take a book and move to the assembly area. Start silent reading. • School Bell at 7.30am: Flag ‐ raising. Students not in queue by 2 nd bell will be regarded as late. 52
