The Study of Psychology and Cognitive Science Psychology is the study of the human mind, its development, and and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context. Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary field focused on the study of thought, memory, perception, language, artificial intelligence, the mind, and more. It draws on psychology, philosophy, anthropology, linguistics, and computer science, among other fields.
Road To Degree
Proposed Psychology Majors Psychology There are two options for the Psychology major: General Major or Intensive Major. Both majors share the same prerequisite courses, but differ in the upper-division required course work. Both sets of majors requirements lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree. What are the declaration requirements for Psychology? 1. Math Requirement (Courses MATH 3 or 4 or 11A or 11B; OR Tests: 300+ on the ALEKS Math Placement or a 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus Exam) 2. PSYC 1: Introduction to Psychology (or 4+ on AP PSYCH) earn a grade of B- or better *Note: If a grade of C or C+ was earned in PSYC 1, a grade of B- or higher must be earned in PSYC 10, Introduction to Developmental Psychology PSYC 2: Introduction to Psychology Statistics (or STAT 5 or STAT 7/7L or 3. score of 4+ on AP STATS) earn a grade of B- or higher All Courses Above Must be Taken for a Letter Grade

Cognitive Science Cognitive Science What are the declaration requirements for Cognitive Science? • Calculus (Courses MATH 11A or 19A or 20A, or score of 4+ in AP Calculus AB, score of 3+ in AP Calculus BC, or score of 60+ in CLEP Calculus) • Programming (CSE 13E or CSE 13S or CSE 20) • PSYC 2: Introduction to Psychology Statistics (or STAT 5 or STAT 7/7L or score of 4+ on AP STATS) • PSYC 20: Cognition, Fundamental Theories You must have an overall 2.8 GPA or higher in the required lower division declaration requirements. Must earn a grade of C or higher in each course. No course can be taken for Pass/No Pass.

Senior Seminar Senior Seminar Requirement • A Senior Seminar is part of your major requirements and ½ of your Disciplinary Communication (DC) requirement • A Senior Seminar must be completed at UCSC and may not be transferred • To enroll in a senior seminar, you must complete the Senior Seminar Survey. The survey is sent out prior to registration to all eligible seniors ( students that have completed 135 cumulative uni ts). You must complete the survey in the quarter prior to when you plan on taking your senior seminar. Seminar permission codes are given on a first come first serve basis, so it's very important to complete the survey as soon as possible • Senior Seminars are numbered 119 ( Developmental seminars ), 139 ( Cognitive Seminars ), 159 ( Social Seminars ) and 179 ( Clinical/Personality seminar s) • Senior Seminars are offered every quarter • Some seminars require certain prerequisites or entrance requirements, so please plan appropriately
Declaring Your Major Cognitive Science Students who indicated Psychology or Cognitive Science on their UC admissions applications will be considered proposed Psychology or proposed Cognitive Science until they declare. ● You may declare a major as early as you would like, if you have satisfied the declaration requirements for the major ● Upper division transfer students are required to be declared in a major by the deadline in their second term at UCSC Students can declare by; ● Attending Drop-in advising with a trained peer advisor ● Attending a Major Declaration Workshop ○ Tuesday, Oct 22 at 10:30am in Social Sciences 2, Room 121 ○ Wednesday, Oct 23 at 3:30pm in Social Sciences 2, Room 121 ● Fall deadline to declare: October 24

Can I take courses Pass/No Pass? Can I take courses Pass/No Pass? • Courses required to declare must be taken for a letter grade. • No more than 25% of your credits earned at UCSC may be graded on a Pass/No Pass basis. You must exercise your P/NP grading option carefully. If you end up with too many UCSC credits graded P/NP, you will not be able to graduate.
