WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR VISIT Example of a first day: • Register in the Oncology Department • Assessment - Weight, vital signs, and checking for symptoms • About a 30 minute wait for pharmacy - A RN will let you know as soon as your medication is ready • You will be informed of your appointment length when scheduled • At the end of your visit you will receive an after visit summary that includes a calendar, medication you received and medication prescribed. EFFECT OF CHEMOTHERAPY ON BLOOD CELLS White blood cells (WBC): help fight infections • When the WBC is below normal you are at higher risk for infection - Avoid people who are ill - Practice good hygiene (especially handwashing) • Signs of infection - Temperature of 101°F or temperature over 100.4°F sustained over one hour - Chills or shaking with or without fever - New or worsening cough - Sore throat - Pain or burning during urination Please report any signs of infection or fever Kaiser Permanente Fresno
EFFECT OF CHEMOTHERAPY ON BLOOD CELLS Platelets: help blood to clot • Low number of platelets can cause bleeding • Signs of bleeding: - Unexpected or sudden bruising and bleeding - Black tarry stool - Report any excessive bleeding or bleeding that continues for more than 10 minutes despite applying direct pressure - Alcohol can increase blood thinning. Avoid consumption throughout treatment. Red blood cells (RBC): carry oxygen • Low RBC can cause anemia and fatigue • Report any chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or dizziness immediately Kaiser Permanente Fresno
