Inspiring our children to dream big, be extraordinary and change the world. Welcome to Ashfield An Introduction to Year 3
Who’s Who? Miss Flint, Mrs Dalziel, Deputy Headteacher Headteacher
Welcome! How are you feeling? Rumour has it that… The reality is… We have 240 children on roll, so it is • Ashfield is big and scary about the same size as Merry Hill It’s true – we have high standards and expectations of behaviour. We have 4 • They’re really strict at Ashfield rules: • There are so many rules at Be safe 1. Ashfield Work hard and allow others to work 2. Be kind to one-another 3. Look after property and our 4. environment There are educational a consequences for those who do not follow our rules
Welcome! How are you feeling? Rumour has it that… The reality is… • They don’t have Teaching We do – we don’t have 1 TA linked to 1 class – TAs support according to the Assistants to help in the juniors needs of the children – this might look different when the children start back in the Autumn due to social distancing rules We have morning and lunch break but • Children don’t get to go out to we do not have a playtime in the play afternoon. Staff do not let the big children take • The big children take over over and morning breaks are staggered so years 3 and 4 can play without the older children
Welcome! How are you feeling? Rumour has it that… The reality is… In normal times we have an open door • Parents aren’t allowed in policy and parents are welcomed. Currently we are not allowing any visitors into the building. We do have parents who come in to help, but not in their own child’s class. We are always particularly grateful for help with school trips Just like Merry hill, we have lovely • Ashfield is so different from teachers and TAs, we have an attractive school environment, we teach English Merry Hill and maths and… all the other subjects in the national curriculum. The children will simply be learning in a different building and in a bit more of a grown up way.
Transition Children will not be able to visit before they start, but a short film showing them the school will be available on the website shortly and the Year 3 teachers are preparing blogs to introduce themselves to the children. The Merry Hill teachers are in the process of transferring all the academic, social and emotional information about the children. SEND coordinators (Mrs Summers from Merry Hill and Mrs Smyth) have met to pass on SEN information and further meetings are planned before the summer break. We hold telephone appointments with you.
Serious Stuff! Holidays during term time We don’t authorise them unless in exceptional circumstances - celebrations taking place abroad do not constitute exceptional circumstances Medical matters Where possible, please avoid making appointments in school hours. We do not authorise absence for medical appointments on Friday afternoons.
More Serious Stuff! Music lessons Currently the Hertfordshire Music Service is providing remote lessons only for existing pupils – we will let you know when the situation changes. Year 3 learn the ocarina – we do have a set that has been sterilised, but considering the current situation, I would recommend, for your own peace of mind, that you provide your own 4 hole ocarinas costing around £12 are available on-line through a number of sellers including Amazon – here is a link to one of the sellers https://www.ocarina.co.uk/shop/plastic-oc/362-4- hole-oc
Even More Serious Stuff! School Comms We use the same communications system as Merry Hill – please make sure you inform us of any changes e.g. mobile phone number or email address Clubs After school are run by The Elms Sport in Schools. They are aiming to start running these again in September. Parents book places directly through them. https://www.elmssportinschools.co.uk/home School Meals Our kitchen is run by Caterlink. Currently the kitchen is closed and those children attending are bringing packed lunches from home. More information will be sent to parents when we know when the kitchen can be re-opened.
Uniform Our children are very proud of their Ashfield uniforms and we believe that uniform is important to of feeling of community and the purposeful way we conduct ourselves in school. But… Please hold fire on buying uniform just yet! Currently our children are not in uniform because I am expecting children to come in freshly laundered clothes every day to help reduce the spread of the COVID virus. It may be that we are in this same position in the Autumn Term and I do not want parents to spend money unnecessarily, only for children to have grown out of their uniform by the time they get to wear it. Children should wear comfortable clothes that are easily laundered – jogging bottoms, T shirts and sweat shirts are ideal. They should wear trainers – this avoids changing shoes for outdoor PE and games. They also need a warm coat and a waterproof (if the coat is not rainproof).
Girls Uniform Grey skirt, pinafore dress or trousers White shirt with collar (not polo shirt) Ashfield school tie Grey jumper or cardigan Grey tights or white socks Black low-heeled shoes ONLY WHEN WE ARE BACK IN Shoulder length hair tied back UNIFORM
Boys Uniform Grey trousers White shirt with collar (not polo shirt) Ashfield school tie Grey jumper Grey socks Black shoes, not trainers
PE Kit Named PE bag Yellow t-shirt Black shorts Black tracksuit bottoms Sensible trainers Yellow sweatshirt Spare pair of socks Hair tie (for ALL long hair) Earring tape (if required)
Buying Your Child’s Uniform Nearly all items are readily available from department stores and supermarkets – it doesn’t not have to have the Ashfield LOGO on DJ Uniforms in Bushey Village (by the pedestrian lights) provides a uniform service: Items with logos Ties Order by phone for collection at the shop or they will deliver to the school (order forms available in the dining room) One stop shop It is a good service but it comes at a premium!
Uniform Guidelines Do name ALL items of clothing Do make children responsible for looking after their belongings Do ensure PE kit is in school every day Don’t wear jewellery, except a watch and stud earrings only. These will have to be removed / covered for PE Don’t wear nail varnish LOST PROPERTY –we don’t have a lost property box. We expect our children to look after their property and we ensure that all named items are returned to children.
