Philmont 2017 • Frank Savino – I am from Troop 31 and coordinating this trip to Philmont – Been to Philmont 4 times, Sea Base twice and Northern Tier once, thus I am a Triple Crowner – Have coordinated trips like this for Troop 31 and the council over the past 12 years – Troop 31 utilizes a 3 year rotation to the 3 high adventure bases. We have not yet gone to The Summit in West Virginia – I am considered the Contingent Leader for now • Any other volunteers? • Can we go around the room and have Scouts & Leaders introduce themselves – Name, Troop, Position, Rank (if Scout) or parent of Scout if the Scout is not here

  4. Philmont 2017 • Currently we have – 21 Scouts – 9 Adults • That has the making of 3 crews – 12 people per crew – Minimum of 2 adults but prefer 3

  5. Philmont 2017 • Philmont eligibility – Youth Participants • A youth must be 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and completed the 8th grade by date of participation. To avoid disappointment, please do not request or expect exceptions! Requirements for Philmont participation cannot be relaxed. • In keeping with the policies of the Boy Scouts of America, rules for participation are the same for everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, or disability. • Youth must be registered members of the Boy Scouts of America, and may participate in a Philmont expedition in one of the following ways: – As members of a chartered unit (Scout troop, Varsity team, or Venturing crew) – As members of a council contingent or district contingent with required leadership – Troop 31 policy is the Scout MUST be Star Rank!

  6. Philmont 2017 • Located in Cimarron New Mexico • Founded 1938 (2016 is 78 th year) • 137,000 acres, 214 sq. miles • Sangre de Christo (Rocky Mountains) • 35 staffed camps, 55 trail camps • Typical Treks are 12 days in length • If you do pre-trek travel the trip is approximately 15 days long

Philmont 2017 • How do we set the priority order for Scouts – Based on receipt of deposit check not sign up • What is the priority used for? – If we have more Scouts than available slots – In the event we drop a crew for lack of adult leaders or deposits • What if I am on the wait list – Be patient, a lot can happen – Stay active in the process

Philmont 2017 • Typically we have done pre-trek touring on the trip for several reasons – Acclimate to the 6,000 + elevations • Does anyone know the elevation of State College? – How about the top of Tussey Mountain? – Philmont base camp is 6,500 feet – Baldy Mountain is approximately 12,500 feet • Take advantage of the great sites • Do some fun adventures

Philmont 2017 • Finances – Troop 31 will be coordinating all deposits and payments unless a specific troop would like to handle their individual crew. – Please see Frank Savino for arrangements • Travel – Must be planed in advance – as much as 9 months prior to leaving – Troop 31 will be coordinating these efforts
