  5. Understanding Financial Aid Offers

Financial Aid Awards + Once a student is accepted to a university they will be able to receive their Financial Aid Award + You must complete verification (if applicable) at each institution to receive your students award letter + Each college will provide a diffe ffere rent award letter with different $$ amounts for your student + Comparing Award Letters is an important step in selecting the college your student will enroll at.

What Type of Money is Available + Grants – money you never have to repay • Federal – Pell • State • University + Federal Student Loans – Subsidized & Unsubsidized + Parent PLUS Loans + Student Work-Study + University Scholarships + Private Scholarships (typically not on the Financial Aid Award)

How to Read a Financial Aid Package + College Possible’s Edquity Tool • Your student has a tool that helps compare financial aid packages • You can access this tool with your student to learn more about comparing the financial aid award for each school Contact your student’s coach to learn more!

College Enrollment Decisions + Why does fit matter? • Students are most successful at colleges that are a good fit Talking to Your Student + Weigh all the factors + Determine what is most important to you and your student + Wait till you have all the options to decide + Talk with your student about making the best enrollment decision

  13. College Enrollment Decisions Balancing the below factors is really important to make sure students are attending an institution where they can successfully graduate at an affordable price. Most Important Decision Factors:  Graduation Rates – the rate of students who start at this school and graduate within 6-years.  Financial Aid Gap – the amount of money not covered by a college.  Total Debt – the total amount of loans after finishing the degree

  14. College Enrollment Decisions There are many other important factors that can help students make a good fit institution. These will each be unique to your students interests at school and beyond. Other Important Decision Factors: • Major– the major options on campus that make students academic interests • Social Factors – • Location – where is the school in location to home • Size - how big is the school & how big are average class sizes • Campus Resources – cultural clubs, study abroad opportunities, etc.

Using Edquity Tool & Enrollment Conferences + At College Possible we have tools that help your student understand their enrollment options. + Edquity is a online tool that compares college options including many of the factors listed previously. + Your student will have a 1:1 conference with their high school coach in the upcoming months about making an enrollment decision. + You will also be invited to that conversation and to have your own with your student over the next several months as financial aid awards arrive.

After Your Decision Enrollment Next Steps + Secure your spot with a deposit (not always $$ required) + Sign up for orientation + Register for classes (typically at orientation) + Accept Financial Aid Award • Entrance Loan Counseling • Master Promissory Note + Sign up for Housing & a Meal Plan (optional) + Send your final High School Transcripts

  18. College Possible College Coaches + Your student will have the full support of a College Possible College Coach until they graduate college! + How College Coaches Connect With Students: • Phone Calls • Texting • Email • In Person Meetings + Encourage Your Student to Connect with their Coach!

Academic Expectations + Students spend less time in class, but are expected to do much more reading and studying outside of class. + Professors expect students to have done the reading and complete assignments on their own. + There are fewer reminders and the material covered in class does not review the reading, but assumes that students have completed it. + Professors Host Office Hours to support students with questions!

Choosing a Major Tips + Your student will have on average the first 2 years to declare their major. + Your student can change their major at any time; however, switching too often can increase time to graduation + Your student’s major doesn’t have to match their career field, there are many opportunities for most majors. + The Career Center & Academic Advisors are there to help!

Helpful Tips/Information + Students typically have class for only 3 hours a day + Joining clubs/social groups is a great way to get connected + Finding a campus job can provide part-time work for students + Asking for help is an important skill for your student! + Tuition statements happen twice a year – July/August and November/December + Student’s must register for classes every semester
