  2. Specific aims • Characterise wheat root (and shoot) architecture traits in the elite MAGIC mapping population • Identify genetic loci that control them • Design ‘breeder friendly’ genetic markers tagging these loci

  3. Method and Phenotyping • Eight parents and 633 lines, grown in a lit and heated glasshouse • 4 reps of each parent and 1 or 2 reps of each line • 4 seedlings per pot • Observed six traits: • Shoot height • Shoot area • Tillers • Root length • Dry root weight • Dry shoot weight

  4. GenStat analysis • Environmental variation on the bench: • Variation accounted for by using a mixed effects model with spatial analysis

  5. QTL mapping – Roots • Using R/mpMap and 90k (18k used) genotyped genetic map ( Gardner et al . 2015 ) • 2 covariates used Root weight Root length RHT1 Chr 1D Chr 4B
