  4. In the spring term 2006 the Urban Design & Development Studio worked with a central area in URBAN BRIEF Göteborg. Caused by the forces of globalization this former free-port is now a huge industrial brownfjeld in the heart of Sweden's second largest city. Frihamnen This small booklet describes our way of fjnding strategies, visions and fjnally a program for one of the most important development areas in Göteborg. We worked with the management approach of the Urban Brief by John Worthington and Knut Strömberg which was an essential part of the theoretical pre-work for this studio project.

  6. GÖTEBORG TODAY - AN INCOHERENT CITY Göteborg has an extremely unintegrated city structure. Specially the parts in the north of the river Göta Älv (Hisingen) are weakly developed compared with the center of Göteborg in the southern part. university, science industry weak housing areas center, exp. residences retail, ofces urban holes

  7. GÖTEBORG TOMORROW - A COHERENT CITY Our overall task as planers will be the design and the creation of a new and strong part that is able to link the northern and the southern part of the city. Göteborg has to change from an undefjned urban patchwork into an interrelated and connected polycentric city structure. Therefore we have to consider the difgerent scales of coherence. COHERENCE CONNECTED - INTERRELATED - CONTIGUOUS - LINKED GLOBAL SCALE LOCAL SCALE Göteborg within difgerent Frihamnen in relation global forces, uncertainties to the city center Frihamnen within a regional Coherent structure environment within the new design MAIN KEY ISSUES connections + accessibility integration instead of segregation sustainability main generators within a certain time schedule summer + winter season global uncertainties change of travelling change of working change of living

  8. S.W.O.T. ANALYSIS S TRENGTH W EAKNESSES The Global View - Göteborg port and harbour identity poor connection to other Euro- pean cities, for example few location between Copenha- cheap fights gen and Oslo - Kattegat and E6 not open minded for new trends and developments Göta Älv till Linköping - good accessibility to the Swedish anti-space, holes and free inland areas within the city centre- incoherent city structure center of universities and knowledge bad access to the harbours and the waterfront big Swedish and interna- tional companies in Göte- extremly bad access to the borg - the labor center of coast and the ocean Sweden hidden city-lack of identity biggest Scandinavian port inordinated road traffjc- great landscape - "West-coast spaghetti is the Best-coast" ineffjcient public transport Göteborg as the Green City long and rainy winters, short with a lot of parks and av- summer enues weak progress of making deci- sions in urban planning

  9. O PPORTUNITIES T HREATS own and unique position on the map of Göteborg will loose in the global Europe competition of cities, for example compared to Malmö strong and fruitful city life along one connected waterfront long and slow going planning process without any fruitful outcome or positive tourist - development all year decisions around strong developers with a lot of money more events and festivals, that we will decide and afgect the planning consider as typical Swedish the incoherent city improvement of the public transport based on an effjcient tram system (NEW segregation, growing gap between rich TRAMS!) and poor districts better accessibility to Sweden's Inland movement of inhabitants and young and the West-coast via Göta Älv educated people, therefore movement of business and industry better connection to other Scandina- vian cities increasing car traffjc increasing port+harbour image, more movement or disappearance ships in the city centre more CRUISE of the ferries caused by global SHIPS forces-last ships in the harbour are vanished more private boats

  12. USERS - THE CITIZENS OF GÖTEBORG AND VISITORS The citizens of Göteborg especially the inhabitants of Hisingen should also be involved in the progress of redevelop Frihamnen and one sound and connected waterfront for this city. The Södra Älvstranden Dialog is therefore a very good example. Although they are not professional architects and city planers the citizens are the future users of the waterfronts. Therefore their input for professional planners is absolutely necessary. CITIZENS VISITORS contact with the water and the ocean direct access to the city center green areas and parks - access to nature a good public transport system small scale market places access to the nature and the ocean sheltered public areas for the wintertime sightseeing - "Paddan-boats" meeting points art and knowledge - galleries and museums sport facilities - a jogging track viewpoints space for concerts, festivals and events regional day-trips a waterfront pool entertainment playgrounds for the children a strong image and identity cosy spaces a safe environment Pool-Ship-Berlin a bath in the summer - sauna center in the winter

  13. E6 to Oslo A NEW FERRY TERMINAL FOR GÖTEBORG An opportunity to solve the traffjc problems in the city centre? CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL FERRY TERMINAL E6 to Copenhagen

  14. CRUISERS vs. FERRIES - DEVELOPMENT IN THE FUTURE We consider the development of ferry transportation and cruise ships as one of the most important issues for the future development in Göteborg. A discussion about this progression was a fundamental basis for our work. FERRIES - OUTSIDE: CRUISERS - CENTRAL: in the future less people will use ferries to travel there is a strong existing cruise industry and it because of cheap fights will even grow in the future people who will use the ferries with their cars and a cruise ship don't need a lot of facilities and caravans don't have to arrive in the heart of Göteborg infrastructure on the land lorry-traffjc could move to the Port of Göteborg and these "swimming hotels" could bring a lot of gain from the good accessibility to the E6 visitors into the center of Göteborg ferries create more traffjc in the city center and visitors can use the central position to see the consume a lot of space for infrastructure that will city and make trips around the west-coast make the city even more incoherent cruise ships could be the central component for the harbour identity of Göteborg
