  3. Context

  4. Strengths Weaknesses SWOT - Ecological functions - Confusing to find one’s way around (orientation) analysis of ● Habitat for species - Lack of green arteries and waterfront - Social functions connectivity walkway ● Recreation - Divided campus and lack of continuity/ No feeling of one ● History/Culture/Identity cohesive community ● Nature experiences Opportunities Threats - Transform existing waterfront - Waterfront housing parking into combined parking and development housing - Increasingly used by an - Attract visitors by keeping and increased number of inhabitants enhancing strengths - Shared Walkway could close community divisions

  5. The Challenge Improving Socio-Ecological sustainability: Bridging the gap between scales - Design solutions that stay adaptable and resilient into the future - Reconcile the major goals of all stakeholders

  6. How to unbreak the Heart What is resilience? It is the ability to maintain essential functions by adapting to change, and coping with shocks. Conditions necessary for resilience: Sufficient diversity (of ideas, resources and actors) Strong relationships (trust and good communication) Willingness to embrace change (open to new ideas and opportunities)

  7. Our Solution - Waterfront Walkway is the seed for a sustainable development methodology in the Otaniemi Community - Make a space for - shared knowledge - trust building - and co-creation

  8. Bridging the Gap What is a Bridging Organization? A network of key individuals or groups able to represent all of the stakeholders, and create an atmosphere of shared learning and co-creation In the case of Otaniemi: Nordic Sustainable Campus Network (organizing transdisciplinary events like NCC, and bringing best practices from other campuses) Urban Mill (physical meeting space and solutions incubator) Competitions as a way to encourage cooperation of stakeholder groups involved in development projects
