British Ports Association 100 port members, owning and managing more than 350 ports, harbours and piers around the UK Included in this are 44 of the busiest 50 UK fishing ports by official government landing statistics, including all of the top ten fishing ports Some ports specialise in fishing with markets and facilities, while at others fish landings supplement cargo operations The BPA has a committee for fishing ports which meets twice a year at different port locations around the UK This committee regularly invites the EMFF fisheries grant awarding bodies to give presentations and generally follows CFP developments
UK ports – summary Collectively UK ports handle just under 500m Import driven Oil and gas = roughly 40% of UK cargoes Unitised – importance of Ro/Ro Many ports are ‘vertically integrated’, handling the cargoes themselves Also a large number of smaller ports specialising in leisure and fishing activities
UK ports policy Ports entirely independent to make commercial and financial decisions No national strategic plans, no public subsidy, apart from EMFF… Devolution – separate but similar ports policies for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland EU fisheries grants awarded by devolved governments

EFF and EMFF grants in the UK The UK has been allocated € 243 million (around £215 million) of the current 2014-20 EMFF programme. This is split between: England - € 92.1 million Scotland - € 107.7 million Northern Ireland - € 23.5 million Wales - € 19.7 million A selection of port schemes follows…

Grimsby Fish Dock • Major fishing port and market on the East Coast of England • Approx. 70% fish sold through the market is imported in containers from the Iceland, Norway, Faroe Islands • Private company
Grimsby Fish Dock Grimsby Fish Market Modernisation The total cost of the project was £1.21m, the port received an EFF grant of £605,000 (50%) towards the project from the Marine Management Organisation in 2012 This was followed in 2013 with another EFF grant to improve the port’s Ice facility. The ‘Ice Plant Project’ cost £260,000 and was again supported by EFF (50%).

Scrabster Harbour Project: Old Fish Pier Redevelopment Description: The project covered the refurbishment and installation of chilling in the Scrabster Fishmarket Total Cost: £707k EFF Funding: £474k (66.67%), the rest of the funding came from Scrabster Harbour Trust In addition to EFF , the Trust has also benefited from ERDF funding over the past 15 years for the following projects Creation of the Queen Elizabeth Ferry & Layby Pier (Grant Award 2001) - £1.686m New Jubilee Quay (Grant Award 2011) - £2.153m
