  17. Some research examples: EcoFlows ● Measuring really • Rising body - Measure distance and time as object rises to surface low streamflow ● Important for habitat ● Test 100 yr old • Surface float - Measure time as object floats a known distance tech Velocity Rod - Measure head buildup on rod; calibrated in flume Flume Field

  18. Some research examples: EcoFlows ● 100 yr old tech actually does pretty well ● A fraction of the cost of conventional methods ● Allows us to expands monitoring network Provisional data, subject to revision.

  19. Some research examples: Periphyton ● What causes periphytic algal growth? ● What can it tell us about water quality?

  20. Some research examples: Periphyton Provisional data, subject to revision.

  21. Some research examples: Periphyton ● In this river, diatoms tell us that the water quality is okay, but not great. Provisional data, subject to revision.

  22. Some research examples: Periphyton ● Most sensitive species tell us that water quality is improving Provisional data, subject to revision.

  23. Some research examples: Algal Blooms • Wide-spread • Can produce toxins • Expensive to monitor

  24. Some research examples: Algal Blooms • Remote sensing • Wide-spread • High detail • Public data • Potential to map water quality at large spatial scales
