THE NATURE OF BAPTISM (Lesson 1 of 5 on the Sacrament of Holy Baptism)
THE RECIPE FOR A VALID BAPTISM The only essential ingredients for an officially acceptable baptism are just two things . . . 1) Plain Water 2) Word of God The baptizer does not have to be a pastor or a Lutheran for it to count.
THE WATER It’s not special holy water but just plain water. It does not matter how much water is used. The Greek word“Baptizo” means to wash, (not necessarily to immerse - Mark 7:4). Sprinkling Pouring Dunking
THE WORD OF GOD It is important that the correct words are said because the power is in the Word of God. We use the words Jesus gave us to use in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
WHAT’S IN A NAME? The name of the Triune God sums up everything that He is and all that He has done for us and for our eternal salvation. The three Creeds are a good summary of what’s wrapped up in the name of our Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
