  2. Big picture Reminder > we set two main goals for 2010: 1. Introduce Drumbeat. Build projects and community. 2. Strengthen position as leading public charity promoting open internet. These are first steps towards a something bigger: huge numbers of new people participating in Mozilla. Picture is getting more concrete, which feels good. 2 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides

  3. Where we are right now Four months into 2010 we have: 1. At least three solid Drumbeat bootstrap projects. 2. Local community event model starting to work. 3. Fundraising rolling, albeit a bit slower than hoped. 4. Mozilla Core mostly on back burner. We’re learning and refining our plans. 3 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides

  4. What success looks like Proposed priorities for rest of 2010: 1. Go deep on 3 - 5 projects that demo Drumbeat. • While also building up platform for large # of projects. 2. Invest in events plus projects combo in 5+ cities. • Support events in many cities, invest where we get most traction. 3. Build solid fundraising capacity, hit our $ targets. Are these the right places to put most of our resrouces? Do these get us far enough toward our long term goals? 4 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides

  5. Projects Current Focus: Push people and funding to most promising bootstrap projects. Get them effective. • Number of projects to target: 3. Stretch: 8 At least: P2PU, Web Made Movies, Universal Subtitles. • Henrik, Shuttleworth Fellowship and Open Video Alliance should generate a few more solid projects. • In short term, put less energy into overall ‘project platform.’ Push later in 2010 to get 2011 projects. 5 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides

  10. Events Current Focus: Find community leaders via first local events. Develop integrated approach in 5 cities. • Target at least 20 cities for events, stretch for 50. Continue to focus on Europe, Brasil, North America. • Integrate event + project approach in 5 cities, stretch for 10. • Kitchen table sprints, meet-ups and other activities where people actively work on or create Drumbeat projects. • Drumbeat Festival could be used as community leadership summit to strengthen leaders we are building locally. 10 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides

  12. Drumbeat Festival • Two possible visions for Drumbeat Festival: • Thought leadership event that creates a big stage for people working on the open internet. - or - • Community leadership summit that rewards and energizes Drumbeat leaders. While we can do a bit of both, we need to decide on our primary focus. 12 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides

  13. Fundraising Open Web Fund ‘t-shirt’ Campaign 1. This becomes the focus until individual donations are on solid footing. May - December ’10 2. Call to action: support Mozilla; contribute to the Drumbeat Open Web Fund. 14. Web site notes • Major new drumbeat.org release. • Dramatic improvements to pages for Drumbeat projects. Also, improvements to better explain to new people to the site. • More improvements still needed after this release. • Especially events and volunteer management / communication. • Progress much slower than hoped. • New webdev hire who started last week already fixing this problem. 14 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides

  15. 2011 and beyond We need to remember: what we’re doing now is designed to set us up for bigger goals in future • Build Mozilla into a massive, dynamic movement. • Mozilla as a whole focuses more on engagement, less on marketing. Massive number of people become active supporters of Mozilla. • Drumbeat projects generate useful ways for these people to participate. Also: deep local roots, create sustainability and innovation at the edge. • ‘Give back’ at a bigger scale, drive innovation. • As we become a successful fundraising organization, we are able to support Drumbeat projects and other initiatives at a much larger scale. 15 May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
