Sinoper By Alex Nunez
How Did It Originate? ● Sinoper was discovered after a piece of iron dioxide (Fe 2 0 3) was dehydrated. It was mainly used in Classical Antiquity and Middle Ages for use in painting. During the Renaissance it was used on the first layer of plaster for a fresco.
Facts: ● Sinoper was named after the Turkish city Sinop ● The word is used both for pigment and for a preparatory drawing ● Sinopia in Latin and Italian translates to “a red ochre.” The English meaning of Sinoper is of a “red Earth colour.”
Who Used Sinoper? ● Not many artists used Sinoper in their paintings, but I managed to find some from the underlayings of some frescos. The first by the Master of the Grigg Crucifixion on the left (Madonna and Child), and just a sinopie sketch by Buonamico Buffalmacco on the right.
