Behaviour that is challenging • We used to talk about problem behaviour or behavioural difficulties • Now we see this as behaviour that challenges services. These behaviours are a product of a range of factors • We need to modify the factors to help the person • Now we talk about challenging behaviour, i.e. behaviour that challenges services to find a solution • Challenging behaviours are a product of a range of factors SECTION 5: 2 Behaviour
What behaviour do you find challenging? • Some behaviours challenge some people but not others • Some extreme behaviours are agreed by most people to be challenging to them • Some behaviours that challenge are really understandable when you analyse the situation SECTION 5: 3 Behaviour
We all have challenging behaviour at times! • Adults with SLD/ PMLD who have one type of behaviour that challenges, often have other types as well • We need to understand the factors involved in the behaviour so we can devise the right kind of intervention. SECTION 5: 4 Behaviour
Stress • Families and professionals can find challenging behaviour very stressful • Support needs to be put in place for staff in services (eg: supervision or mentoring) • And for families at home (eg: respite care or counselling) SECTION 5: 5 Behaviour
