Bike Auckland cycling opposition to EWL • Bike Auckland (BA) opposed the East West project because of: • Severance of the harbour frontage • Opportunity cost of replicated cycling facilities • Major lack of connections to local cycling networks • Inadequate separation between walk and cycle elements • Poor design to cater for commuting and recreational cycling needs

Auckland Cycling Context • 2015 – 2018 Urban Cycle Programme investment major boost to uptake • New projects concentrated on City Centre for employment and tourism benefits • City Centre focus of public transport • Local Boards investing – Orakei, Mangere Future Streets • Future investment to extend to suburban centres and public transport nodes

EWL cycling design • Sector 1 Orpheus Dr shared paths – lacks walk- bike separation • Sector 2 Onehunga Mall/ train station shared path – lacks walk and bike separation • Sector 3 & 4 – Upgraded 4km waterfront cycleway replaces Waikaraka Cycleway. Inadequate local links • Sector 5 – Panama Bridge – shared path on lacks walk/bike separation • Sector 6 – Otahuhu Ck – lacks greenways and local school links • Sector 7 – Otahuhu Interchange – Princes St lacks protection for walkers and bikes • Sectors 1-7 – detailed design input required for Bike Auckland

NZTA- Bike Auckland side agreement • Sector 1 – Orpheus Dr – separation for walk/bike except for few constrained width areas • Sector 2 – Onehunga Mall/train station – separated walk/ bike/ vehicles • Sector 3 – 4 – Hugo Johnstone Drive separated cycleway, extended link for Alfred St and Ameti- Sylvia Park • Sector 5 – Panama Bridge upgrade to separated walk/cycle • Sector 6 – Underpass at Otahuhu Ck/SH 1. Links to Greenways to be left to later ‘best endevours ’ • Sector 7 – Otahuhu Interchange – Frank Grey Place – improved physical protection for walkers/bikes • Sectors 1-7 – agreement on detailed design input from BA

  9. Outstanding cycling links • Link to O’Rorke Rd (Mt Smart and Penrose Train Station • Mangere Inlet to Portage – boardwalk. Link proposed by Maungakiekie- Tamaki and Mangere- Otahuhu Local Boards • Link for Greenways and local schools from Otahuhu Underpass on SH1
