• Bo Bots tswana na: By 2020, the rate of loss of all natural habitats, including forests, is at least halved and where feasible brought close to zero, and degradation and fragmentation is significantly reduced. • Bur i: D’ici à 2015, le rythme de dégradation et de fragmentation des habitats naturels, Burund undi: y compris les forêts et les marais est sensiblement réduit et ramené à près de zéro. SMARTer • Rw Rwanda: Target 5: (P .64) By 2020, natural ecosystems, especially identified “Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE)” sites are safeguarded, their degradation and fragmentation reduced. • Er Eritr itrea: By 2020,the loss of natural habitats, degradation and fragmentation of ecosystems has been significantly reduced. Critical habitats under serious threats of degradation that require protection such as highland forests, riverine forests, mangroves, etc have been prioritized. In reducing the rate of degradation calls for a proper development and management plans for those critical habitats proposed under Protected Area System (Semenawi and Debubawi Bahri, Buri-Irrori- Hawakil Islands, as well as Bara’sole bay) for Conservation of Biodiversity and Mitigation of Land Degradation. Inventories and assessments to set baseline studies will be carried out to determine the state of biodiversity and highlight trends. Threats of degradation in non-protected areas equally need to be addressed. This includes areas of rich biodiversity such as Gash-setit Elephant sanctuary, open grasslands, Islands, etc.
Linkages between the conservation and the restoration of natural habitats (Targets 5 and Target 15) • Targets 5 and 15 are interlinked, in so far as ecosystem restoration can be used as a way to improve the net balance of ecosystem loss and degradation at the national scale. • However, gains in natural ecosystems from restoration do not compensate for loss of natural habitat in the same time frame. • National targets that distinguish between gr gros oss los oss of natural ecosystems and gains provide a clearer contribution to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and targeted ga facilitate an assessment of outlook at the regional or global scale through the aggregation of national targets.
