WHAT IS RECLAIMED WATER? • Reclaimed (or recycled) water (also called effluent) is the end product of a wastewater treatment facility
ARIZONA FACTS • 1926 First use of reclaimed water at South Rim of Grand Canyon • 1972 First reclaimed water use rules • 1999 Legislative support for reuse of reclaimed water • 2001 Overhaul of reclaimed water rules • Today • Arizona ranks 2 nd in highest per capita reuse in the nation • Arizona is 1 st in integrating reclaimed water into water supply portfolios • 82% of reclaimed water reuse nationwide occurs in four states, including Arizona
PHOENIX FACTS • Phoenix reuses over 90% of its reclaimed water for beneficial uses (farming, habitat enhancement and industrial cooling) • Phoenix has been in a partnership with the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station since 1973 to provide reclaimed water for use in its cooling towers • Today Phoenix recycles over 20 billion gallons of wastewater each year for use at Palo Verde
RECLAIMED WATER FACTS • Arizona reclaimed water reuse rules are recognized nationally • Wastewater treatment facilities have the ability to effectively treat water to very high water quality standards • Of 100 of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in Arizona, 93 distribute reclaimed water for reuse and 58 treat to Class A+ standards
