Exodus 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord: “I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea
Exodus 15:1-21 Called To Remember
“ [Exodus 15:1-21] is a song of victory to Yahweh (v. 1) and about Yahweh; it is a response to what he has done...Built into Scripture is the notion that the song should be repeated... We have, in other words, a reminder of the liturgical and ritualistic function of the song . It is a repeated celebration of God’s deliverance, of which God’s people must be reminded constantly. - Peter Enns, The NIV Application Commentary (emphasis mine)
Remembrance #1: God is a warrior on his people’s behalf
Exodus 15:2-3 “The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. 3 The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name.

Remembrance #2: God’s victory is complete and final
Exodus 15:4-6 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh’s officers are drowned in the Red Sea. 5 The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone. 6 Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy.
Exodus 15:7-8 “In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble. 8 By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood up like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
Exodus 15:9-10 The enemy boasted, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.’ 10 But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
Exodus 15:11 Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?
Exodus 15:12, 14-15 “You stretch out your right hand, and the earth swallows your enemies. The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip the people of Philistia. 15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away;
Exodus 15:16, 18 terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone— until your people pass by, Lord, until the people you bought pass by. “The Lord reigns for ever and ever.”
Exodus 15:16, 18 terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone— until your people pass by, Lord, until the people you bought pass by. “The Lord reigns for ever and ever.”
Remembrance #3: God leads his people to dwell with him
Exodus 15:13, 17 In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling. You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance— the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.
Remembrance #1: Jesus is a warrior on his people’s behalf
1 Corinthians 15:3-5, 57 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve...57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Remembrance #2: Jesus’ victory is complete and final
1 Corinthians 15:24-27 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he “has put everything under his feet.”
Remembrance #3: Jesus leads his people to dwell with him
1 Corinthians 15:20-22 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
Called to remember: Tuning our hearts toward Christ
“ Lord, you have taken the fear of death away from us. The end of our life here you have made the beginning of true life. For a little while you will let our bodies rest in sleep, and then with the last trumpet you will wake them from their sleep...When you shattered the gates of hell and trampled the devil, death’s lord, beneath your feet, you cleared the way for our resurrection. - St. Macrina the Younger
“ To us who fear you, you gave a sign, the sign of your holy cross, to destroy the enemy and infuse new vigor into our lives. - St. Macrina the Younger
