Committee • Cole Holocker and Steve Johnson, Chairs • 2 parents • 4 students • 2 school counselors • 3 classroom teachers • 2 school administrators • 3 central office administrators 2
Key Questions • Should CCPS eliminate its local graduation requirement of .5 PE credit? • Will students take fewer PE credits if we reduce the graduation requirement? • Does having PE credit on a high school transcript disadvantage students applying to college? • Would reducing the requirement help with student schedules? 3
Data and Information • 10/24 Maryland school districts require 1.0 PE credit • 14/24 Maryland school districts require .5 PE credit • CCPS has required 1.0 PE credits for at least 20 years, since the 1993 Program of Studies • CCPS graduating seniors of the Class of 2012 completed an average of 1.58 PE credits • 50% of that senior class completed only 1.0 PE credit • 50% of that senior class completed more than 1.0 PE credit • CCPS requires 20 specific credits (18.5 mandated courses) for graduation • Students have 12-14 credits as choice electives 4
Colleges and Universities • Do you look negatively against the extra .5 PE credit that CCPS students have on their transcripts vs. students from other school districts who only have .5 PE credit? Delaware Maryland, College Park Drexel Penn State Frostburg Stevenson Hood Virginia Tech James Madison 5
Scheduling Based on an analysis of two years worth of student course selection data and scheduling conflict matrices, our committee concluded that having the extra .5 PE credit actually helps the building of the master schedule and allows more courses to run that students wish to take. 6
