Orthodoxy in Turkey (**split into 2**) One of the five major Sees ò Rise of ottoman empire ò Fall of ottoman empire ò Founding of st George as patriarchate; phanar (the light/the lantern); the ghetto ò Population exchange ò Modern day situation of orthodoxy ò 2000 greek orthodox left in istanbul ò 32 priests and deacons serving 76 churches, 10 people MAX per church, churches ò serving on various days, not open every day (www.pappaspost.com, the greeks of turkey)
Real Break Constantinople ò March 8-16, 2013 ò Under the leadership of Fr. Mark Leondis of St. Mark’s in Boca Raton, FL and Kapeluck-Nixon, national youth director of the Ukranian Archdiocese of America ò General Mission: to work for three days at a site of the Ecumenical Patriarch’s choice, usually gravesite or church restauration/renovation ò Our trip: restoring a gravesite in the Chalcedon region of Turkey. We spent three days weeding, painting, refurbishing destroyed headstones, and generally beautifying the final resting place of a few Greek Orthodox Christians
