PSHEE - PFG
PSHEE ‘gives someone autonomy ’. Giving someone the ability to make choices (informed by knowledge); not just ‘legal’ but ‘right’ .
Statutory RSE from September 2020 ● Physical Health & Wellbeing ● Relationship & Sex Education ● Living in the Wider World
What makes PSHEE effective? ● Realistic: teaching strategies that draw out relevant issues by asking pupils to self-identify their concerns relevant to each topic. ● Relevant: information, skills and range of opinions on each topic before they are faced with a situation in which it is needed . The ‘too little, too late’ approach to RSE fails the basic human rights of a young person. Relevant to the current needs of children and young people growing, learning and living in a modern world. ● Accessible: a range of teaching strategies , appropriately paced meet the needs of all pupils, irrespective of their academic abilities, personal beliefs or lived experiences. ● Small group sizes: mixed gender, mixed ability, friendship groups... ● Positive: an approach that talks positively about healthy, fulfilling relationships based on trust, respect and communication . ● Non-judgemental: does not impose values, beliefs and opinions. Faith schools may teach RSE in accordance with the distinctiveness of their religious teachings, but should avoid causing pupils to feel negatively about their individual opinions or lifestyle choices .
The Scheme of Work - A Spiral Curriculum. ● Aim: raising of aspiration, development of self-esteem, confidence, resilience and empowerment to make informed, healthy choices based on accurate information and knowledge . ● Structure: a spiral programme that provides pupils with opportunities to develop their understanding of the various topics in a developmental way, building on prior learning relevant to each year group. Where possible, the curriculum will be complemented by themed assemblies, topic days and cross-curricular links.

Assessment - Implicit Demonstrating Progress - Showing Impact It is not about grading and written data but about comparing students results against previous results (e.g. comparing a plenary with a benchmark starter activity). Students themselves will be able to judge whether they e.g. ● are more confident ● are more able to assess risk Students need time and space to reflect (privately or through discussion).
