Need Need ¡f ¡for or ¡Acces ¡Accessible ¡Pr e ¡Pros ostheD eDcs cs: • The ¡World ¡Health ¡Organiza2on ¡es2mates ¡that ¡80% ¡of ¡amputees ¡live ¡in ¡ low ¡income ¡countries, ¡yet ¡only ¡5% ¡of ¡amputees ¡have ¡access ¡to ¡ prosthe2c ¡care. ¡ ¡ • Poor, ¡developing ¡na6ons ¡such ¡as ¡Guatemala ¡receive ¡no ¡support ¡from ¡ local ¡governments. ¡ ¡ ¡ • VHP ¡aims ¡to ¡help ¡poor ¡na6ons, ¡such ¡as ¡Guatemala, ¡by ¡introducing ¡a ¡ sustainable ¡clinic ¡that ¡can ¡meet ¡local ¡needs; ¡ • Our ¡program ¡has ¡the ¡ability ¡to ¡generate ¡future ¡prosperity ¡in ¡those ¡ communi6es ¡through ¡technology ¡transfer. ¡ 3
The ¡ ¡Need ¡ ¡in ¡ ¡Guatema mala: • Guatemala’s ¡current ¡healthcare ¡system ¡is ¡ severely ¡underfunded ¡and ¡as ¡such ¡can ¡not ¡ support ¡amputees ¡needing ¡prosthesis. ¡ • For ¡people ¡missing ¡an ¡upper-‑limb, ¡lack ¡of ¡a ¡ prosthe6c ¡is ¡a ¡major ¡disability ¡that ¡affects ¡their ¡ quality ¡of ¡life. ¡ ¡ • Missing ¡limbs ¡can ¡lead ¡to ¡social ¡exclusion ¡from ¡ community, ¡and ¡can ¡be ¡a ¡burden ¡to ¡the ¡ suppor6ng ¡family. ¡ • Missing ¡limbs ¡make ¡it ¡very ¡difficult ¡to ¡gain ¡ employment. ¡ ¡ • Everyday ¡tasks ¡such ¡as ¡tying ¡shoelaces, ¡ea6ng ¡ with ¡a ¡knife ¡and ¡fork, ¡or ¡using ¡a ¡zipper, ¡are ¡ difficult ¡for ¡amputees ¡to ¡do. ¡ 4
