Progress in Mining R&D Progress Update to MEMSA 15 June 2017
Rationale for TARA • In the quest for mechanised mining solutions, the Mining Industry needs to be aware of what capability and offerings of local OEMs. Need to assess “Who has what and at where • along the TRL journey is the technology” • The Mining Precinct through the SAMERDI initiative is developing a tool to assist local OEMs’ get in contact with mining companies penetrate the market; • Technology Availability and Readiness Atlas (TARA) based on Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) • A database under development
A Mine for testing • Under what conditions are the OEMs prepared to utilize the site, in terms of the utilization of equipment at the test mine? This will cover costs, Ts&Cs etc. • Will the OEMs provide operators, or operator training, and under what conditions? • Will OEMs use the existing workshops (surface and underground), and under what conditions? • Are OEMs prepared to work collectively, to help develop systems rather than testing individual pieces of equipment? • How will OEM competitiveness and IP be dealt with in an “open” environment? • Will OEMs provide maintenance staff? • How will interfaces be managed between OEM owned IP on data collection and a common platform to the control room?
R&D Challenge to OEMs Challenge 1: Rapid Reef Development. • Need to find a rapid reef development solution, which uses a continuous mining application, such as a roadheader for hard rock mines. – AngloGold Ashanti looking fora development system that can be used in conjunction with their reef boring work. Operate in quartzite rock (>270 MPa), on reef, cutting on strike, headings of the order of 4 meters wide by 3 metres – Sibanye and AngloPlatinum - Bord and Pillar development on reef, in platinum operations. Similar dimensions, but rock> 180 MPa. • The system must cover support installation and cleaning.
R&D Challenge to OEMs Challenge 2: Modernising the Current Mining • How to improve the cycle through a focus on People, Processes and Technologies, in an integrated way. • Previously “silo” approach to technology. Can existing solutions be revisited in a systems approach? • This challenge therefore requires OEMs to come together to consider the complete cycle and all of its activities, in order to create a balanced system that can at least double face advance, while also improving health and safety.
Mining Demonstrators • MEMSA members have been invited to use the space at the Mining Precinct to advertise their offerings. • This is the 2 nd call for the utilisation of the space. • Not only physical equipment, other material can be proposed and will be considered. • Need to get as many as possible in preparation for the launch (at some point!).
