Tonight’s Purpose • To assist students and parents/guardians in selecting courses most beneficial and relevant to each student’s post -high school plans • To provide the opportunity to learn about the scheduling process and the programs available in the high school
What We Know Today… • In order to compete in a 21 st century global economy, Pennsylvania needs a highly-educated and proficient workforce. • The current year’s U.S. workforce is facing a shortage of 12 million qualified workers for the fastest-growing job sectors including health care, information services, and Engineering - Mining specific. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) • This will make it imperative that all students - both enrolled and out of school - have the skills and education to meet this shortage.
Preparation For “Life Beyond High School” • Career, Workplace,& College Ready: – Get a solid and broad academic education – Take challenging/rigorous courses in academic, honors, AP, or CE subjects – Maintain good grades in high school – Become involved in co-curricular/extra- curricular activities
Preparation For “Life Beyond High School” • Fast Facts (www.ed.gov)… – Continuing your education after high school is more likely to allow you to make more money than people who stop at high school – Of the 20 fastest-growing occupations, more than half require an associate’s degree or higher – The higher your education level, the higher your chances are of finding and keeping a job

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses • An AP student receives the maximum preparation for college • Students may be exempt from taking certain courses in college with an AP test grade of 3 or higher. The AP test is a comprehensive test given at the conclusion of the AP course. Five is the highest grade a student may earn on the exam • Students may be eligible for honors and special programs in college for being an AP student in high school • Requires summer work & extensive homework • AP students receive a GPA weight of .2 for having a final grade of a C or higher • Cost for each exam is approximately $90.00
AP Courses Offered At BASH • AP Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental, Physics – C Mechanics, Physics I • AP Math: Calculus (AB & BC), Statistics • AP Social Studies : Economics, European, U.S. History, Psychology, US Gov./Comp. Gov. • AP English Language & Composition • AP English Literature & Composition • AP Computer Science • AP Studio Art • AP Music Theory • AP Seminar
Concurrent Enrollment (CE) • High school students are able to take college courses and receive high school credit as well as college credit. • Students can take concurrent enrollment courses at the high school in an approved concurrent enrollment course. • This opportunity is in partnership with Montgomery County Community College.
Why Take CE Courses? • Students get the experience of taking a college course while still receiving the support from the high school • Students get an early start on the courses required at college • CE credits transfer to all the state universities and other institutions that have partnerships with the community college • CE students receive a GPA weight of .1 for having a final grade of a B- or higher • Parents save money! The cost of CE credit is reduced @ $190.00 per 3 – 4 credit course
Concurrent Enrollment Courses Offered At BASH • Spanish III (6 credits) • Spanish IV (6 credits) • Environmental Science • Astronomy (4 credits) • CPR/First Aid • US History from 1877 • US National Government • Advanced Painting • Introduction to Education • English Composition I & II (6 credits) • English Composition I/Technical Writing (6 credits) • Computer Applications • Web Design
End-Of-Course Assessments (EOCA’s) • Are administered in all courses at BASH (except Keystone Trigger Courses & AP Courses if AP exam is taken) • At the conclusion of the school year administered via an EOCA schedule for English, Math, Science, Social Studies, & World Language • All related study courses administered during class time at the conclusion of the course • Constitute twenty (20) percent of a course’s final grade
Keystone Exams (Re-takes) • Currently administered in the following courses – Algebra I – English Literature (English 10) – Biology (Biology 9/10) • Re-takes administered in December & May through a student’s Junior year – Student will be required to attend remediation (for below proficient area identified by Keystone Exam results) during FLEX
Student Support Programs • School Counseling Department Services • School Counselor FLEX Sessions (e.g. college planning, financial aid, testing) • Student Assistance Program (SAP) • Student Academic Support through teacher access (Tutoring) • National Honor Society Tutors • Skills Development Room ( Facilitates, academic support, Tutoring & Flex assignments GIS-MIS-CIS ) • Flex period (GIS – MIS – CIS – ENRCH-QSR)

Course Selections for 2018-2019 SY • Teachers and parents signed the course selection sheets prior to collection • Cards will be collected during Social Studies class 2-9-18). Students will be meeting with school counselors in Social Studies class and individually (as student requests) with his/her school counselor between 2-12-18 & 5-18-18 • Students are expected to complete the courses they select • Schedules will be mailed to students in August
General Information • Selection of Courses (Academic, Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), Concurrent Enrollment (CE), Career-Technical (BCTC ) • Students are urged to get advice from parents, teachers, & school counselors • Use electives to explore career paths • Contractual nature of selections ( NO CHANGES AFTER 5-18-18! )
Six-Day Cycle and Class Load • BASH uses a six-day cycle with 8 possible instructional periods and a FLEX per day. • TOTAL CREDITS MUST ADD UP TO A MINIMUM OF 7.0 CREDITS AND A MAXIMUM OF 8.0 CREDITS. • Be cognizant of open campus/study halls • Select ample electives
Graduation Requirements • Students must accumulate 24 credits in grades 9 through 12 • Career Portfolio (non BCTC students) • Senior Project (BCTC students) • Keystone Exam Proficiency (2020 & beyond)
Minimum number of courses/credits needed for graduation SUBJECT SPECIFIED AS • English The equivalent of four year-long courses in grades 9-12 • Social Studies The equivalent of four year-long courses in grades 9-12 • Science* Three year-long courses in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 • Mathematics Four year-long courses in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 • Health Two planned courses, one each in grades 10 and 11 • Physical Education** Four planned courses, one each in grades 9-12 • One planned course in grades 9 - 12 – Class of 2021 & beyond World Language • Electives (See Course Description Section) Total credits must equal or exceed 24 *Students who plan on attending a four-year college/university are encouraged to take four. ** NJROTC courses satisfy physical education requirement for 12 th grade. *This information can be found on page 3 of the Program of Studies book.
