Water levels - Nonacho Lake – differences after vs before development MV2011L4-0002 Nonacho Lake control dam Tronka Chua Gap
In 1968, the Northern Canada Power Commission completed a rockfill dam at the outlet to this lake on the Taltson River system in conjunction with the Taltson River Hydro Project. The lake became part of the reservoir for the 21 MW Twin Gorges hydroelectric generating station which provided power to Pine Point and now serves Fort Smith, Hay River, Enterprise, and Fort Resolution. Gray (see above) and Hjalmar (see INLAND WATERBODIES--Hjalmar Lake) lakes also became part of the reservoir. Impoundment of the water raised the lake level between 0.3 and 1.8 m above historical levels, with the highest water levels being in the fall and the lowest in early spring following winter draw-down. This is opposite to the natural sequence of water levels and results in summer flooding of the lowlands. There is also spillage of water from the lake overland to Tronka Chua Lake (see INLAND WATERBODIES-- Tronka Chua Lake) when the lake level exceeds an elevation of 344.5 m (1050 feet). (Envirocon Limited et al. 1975)
DFO sampled burbot, lake cisco, lake trout, lake and round whitefish, longnose and white sucker, and northern pike from the lake in 1967. Lake trout and lake whitefish from Nonacho Lake were also sampled in 1968, 1973 and 1986, and longnose sucker in 1968. In 1972, DFO conducted a limnological survey of the lake. Data were collected on the water chemistry, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and zoobenthos of the lake.
