Citation Her Majesty the Queen has graciously approved a Royal Warrant setting out the conditions under which the Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal may be awarded. ‘For Exemplary Fire Service’ This honour is only gained after tendering 20 years long and meritorious service to the Fire Brigade and the public. The awarding of this medal indicates the high esteem in which the recipient is held by the authorities and the public and expresses their gratitude for honourable service and devotion to duty. www.dsfjre.gov.uk

Extracts from the Royal Warrant Elizabeth R Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other Realms and Territories QUEEN, head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, to all to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting! Whereas We, being desirous of honoring those who have rendered long and meritorious service as members of the Fire Brigades of the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, did by warrant dated 1st June 1954 for Us, Our Heirs and Successors institute and create a new Medal to be designated and styled ‘The Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal’. The qualifying period requisite for the award shall be twenty years’ wholetime or part time service in one of the Fire Brigades. No person shall be recommended for the Medal unless, having completed the qualifjed period of service, it is certifjed that his character and conduct have been very good. It is also a requirement that the candidates shall have been put forward by the Chief Fire Offjcer. Acting to Protect & Save

  6. Medal recipients Firefjghter Michael Beal Michael has served at Wellington Fire Station as a fjrefjghter since 1991. Watch Manager Paul Chamberlain Paul joined the Service in 1988, at the age of 16, as a Junior Firefjghter at Williton before joining the retained ranks in 1990. He became a wholetime fjrefjghter in 1992, serving at Yeovil and Taunton, before a temporary promotion to Leading Firefjghter in the Community Safety Department in 1997 and another to Community Safety for Bridgwater Group Support in 2005. Paul worked in Barnstable Group Support in 2008 and Taunton Group Support in 2009. He was promoted to Watch Manager at Bridgwater in 2010 and is currently working as a Training Manager at the Severn Park Training Centre, Bristol. Watch Manager Stefan Clark Stefan joined Camels Head Fire Station as a fjrefjghter in 1991 and moved to Exeter in 1994. He was promoted to Leading Firefjghter at the BA School in 2000 before joining Fire Safety as a Sub Offjcer in 2002. He became a Watch Manager at Exmouth in 2004. www.dsfjre.gov.uk

  7. Medal recipients Firefjghter Julie Coombes Julie is believed to be the longest serving female fjrefjghter in the Service, having served at Wells Fire Station since 1991. Crew Manager Donald James Distin Donald joined the Service as a fjrefjghter at Ashburton in 1991 and was promoted to Crew Manager in 2001. He has also provided Day Cover at Buckfastleigh since 1998. Watch Manager Fred Glanville Fred joined Yelverton Fire Station in 1991 and was promoted to Leading Firefjghter in 2000. He was promoted again to Watch Manager at the station in 2006. Group Manager Paul Godwin Paul started his career with the Service as a retained fjrefjghter at Taunton Fire Station in 1990 and joined the wholetime personnel at the same station in 1992. He was promoted to Leading Firefjghter in Training in 1998 and moved to Yeovil Fire Station as Sub Offjcer in 2000. After promotion to Station Offjcer at Taunton in 2001 he joined the Operations Policy and Planning Department in 2004 and Service Development in 2008. He is currently Temporary Group Manager in Taunton Group. Acting to Protect & Save

Medal recipients Station Manager Peter Golding Peter joined the Service as a fjrefjghter at Yeovil in 1990 and served as a Leading Firefjghter at Taunton and Yeovil before promotion to Sub Offjcer, in the Training Department, in 1997. He became Watch Manager at Bridgwater in 1999 and Temporary Station Manager with the Taunton Group Support Team in 2008. Crew Commander Ashleigh John Harding Ashleigh joined Exmouth Fire Station as a retained fjrefjghter in 1990 and was promoted to Crew Commander in 2006. Firefjghter Martin Paul Hendrick Martin joined the Service as a retained fjrefjghter at Ilminster in 1987 before joining the wholetime ranks at Yeovil White Watch in 1992. He became a Trainer at the station in 1998 before becoming part of Blue Watch in 2007. Firefjghter Chris Jenkins Chris has served as a fjrefjghter at Lynton Fire Station since 1991. Firefjghter Steve Manley Steve joined Blue Watch at Exeter in 1991 before moving to Special Operations as a USAR Technician in 2008. www.dsfjre.gov.uk

  9. Medal recipients Station Commander Jim Morrison Jim joined the Service in Greater Manchester in 1989 before transferring to Somerset in 2000. He worked at Taunton, South and West Area in Somerset, Ops Support, and Severn Park Training Centre before returning to Taunton in 2009. Ian David Peters Ian joined the Service as a Personnel Assistant in the Pay and Conditions Team in 1989 and became a Finance Assistant in 1993. After moving to West Devon District as a District Admin Assistant in 1997 and then Fleet Admin Assistant in 1998, Ian rejoined the Finance Team as a Finance Offjcer later that year. Station Manager Ashley Raddon Ashley joined Camels Head as a fjrefjghter in 1991 before moving to Torquay in 1993, where he was promoted to Leading Firefjghter in 1998. The following year he was promoted to Operational Intelligence at SHQ as a Sub Offjcer before returning to Torquay in 2001. He was promoted to Station Offjcer in Fire Safety based at Torquay in 2003. Firefjghter Anthony William Savage Anthony has been a fjrefjghter at Tavistock Fire Station since 1989. Crew Commander Mark Stainer Mark joined Wells Fire Station as a fjrefjghter in 1989 and became Crew Commander at the station in 2005. Watch Manager Robin Sturtivant Bob joined Exeter Fire Station as a fjrefjghter in 1991 and was promoted to Leading Firefjghter at the BA School in 1996. He joined the East Division Fire Safety Department as Sub Offjcer in 1999 and returned to the BA School in 2001. He returned to Exeter as a Sub Offjcer in 2003 and was promoted to Station Offjcer in 2004, while also serving as a USAR Technician. In 2008, he joined Exmouth as a Watch Commander. www.dsfjre.gov.uk

Crew Manager Robert Waite Robert joined Bampton Fire Station as a fjrefjghter in 1989 and was promoted to Crew Manager in 2004. Crew Manager Mark Withers Mark joined Blue Watch at Bridgwater in 1989 and was promoted to Temporary Crew Manager of the Watch in 2010. CFO Commendation Letter of commendation Watch Manager Nigel Parker Nigel was travelling with his wife along the A38 on the way to a holiday in Cornwall when they encountered a 19-year- old pedestrian who had suffered serious head injuries after a collision with a car. Nigel protected the woman with his car before administering CPR for 20 minutes while awaiting the arrival of the ambulance crews. Unfortunately the patient did not recover from her injuries. Nigel’s actions to try to save a life while off duty in traumatic circumstances were in the best traditions of the Service. Pete Frearson Pete is an Emergency Gas Technician with Wales and West Utilities who attended a gas leak at fmats in Monmouth Road, Taunton, in November 2010. After discovering rising gas levels within the building, Pete proceeded to move from door to door, warning the residents of the danger and opening windows as he went to lessen the potential danger. He then alerted the emergency services to assist with the evacuation. Pete’s swift and decisive actions saved lives and prevented a potential gas explosion. www.dsfjre.gov.uk
