THE MAJOR THE MAJOR THE FOUR FIELDS PRE-MAJOR REQUIREMENTS ▸ ▸ Our department has four fields: You’ll be a pre-major until: ▸ Theory (field I) ▸ You complete four major prep classes (101, 102, 103 or 104, and 201), all with a C or better ▸ American (field II) ▸ and your cumulative GPA is at least 2.4 ▸ Comparative (field III) 1. Cumulati ve GPA: An average based on all courses attempted at SDSU and transferable courses at other ▸ International (IR, field IV) universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges. Your cumulative GPA can be found on your transcri pt or degree evaluation. ▸ NB: You can take courses in any order (e.g. field I doesn’t have to come before field II; 101 doesn’t have to come before 102) ▸ The move into the major happens automatically (no paperwork needed) THE MAJOR THE MAJOR UPPER-DIVISION REQUIREMENTS THE CAPSTONE ▸ 1 class in each of the 4 fields ▸ Three capstone options: ▸ 4 additional upper-division courses in any of the 4 fields ▸ An internship ▸ You could do 1 from each, all 4 from one, any combination ▸ A senior thesis you’d like! ▸ A capstone seminar (500-level) ▸ 1 capstone course ▸ If you’re interested in a senior thesis or one of our internship ▸ = 9 total upper-division courses programs in Sacramento or D.C., it’s good to plan early

THINGS TO KNOW THINGS TO KNOW DOUBLE-DIPPING COURSES 102 & THE INSTITUTIONS REQUIREMENT ▸ “Double-dipping” means a course checks the box for more than ▸ Our 102 is required for all majors and meets half of the one graduation requirement American institutions requirement (101 completes the other half) ▸ You can double-dip major courses with GE requirements ▸ If you have credit for 102 from the AP exam or an out-of-state ▸ You can double-dip lower-division major prep classes with college, your credit checks the major box but not the other majors / minors, if they’re required institutions one ▸ You can’t double-dip upper-division major courses with any ▸ Several of our upper-division courses will finish the CA piece other major or minor of the requirement & count as major courses ▸ You can double-dip upper-division major courses with certificate requirements, with some restrictions THINGS TO KNOW THINGS TO KNOW THE WRITING REQUIREMENT STUDY ABROAD ▸ ▸ https://wpa.sdsu.edu You aren’t required to study abroad as a polisci major, but if you want to, great! ▸ If you need to take a W course, it doesn’t have to be our 390W ▸ (even though your degree evaluation says this) All plans should start with the study abroad office: https:// newscenter.sdsu.edu/student_affairs/isc/studyabroad.aspx ▸ You’ll only need to talk to the polisci advisor (me) if you want to take some major courses while abroad ▸ If you want to go for a semester (or a year), please start planning early!
