  2. Photek Company Presentation The Photek Story q Established September 1991 q Located in South East England, near Royal Observatory (now moved to Scotland) q Company Formed By Management Acquisition of Electro-Optics Division of ITL when ITL went into administration q Company originally manufactured small numbers of specialist detectors for Space Science and Physics research products q Grown from 14 Employees at Start Up to 60 Employees at Present 2 www.photek.co.uk

  3. Photek at a Glance q Photek is a specialist manufacturer of vacuum based detectors and camera systems for photon detection. q The product range includes; Image Intensifiers, Camera Systems, Photomultiplier Tubes, Streak Tubes plus a range of associated electronics. q Experts in large area and ultra-high speed imaging and advanced photon counting camera systems q Long and successful history or working with the scientific and industrial community q Established sales channels into USA, China and Europe 3 www.photek.co.uk

  4. Summary q Photek products serve several key Markets: Defence, Microscopy, Life Sciences, High Energy Physics, Scientific Research, Industrial and Space q No external capital required to support growth plans q Established UK and International Academic & Research links aid both R&D and Sales. q Several active commercial & development projects are to bring significant revenues within 3 years and help diversify both the market and product mix q Photek is a recognized leader in developing its enabling technologies for both scientific research and commercial applications q Has potential for significant organic growth 4 www.photek.co.uk

  5. Space Science Projects- Advance Composition Explorer XMM Newton • NASA CRIS Detector (Cosmic Ray • Largest Scientific Satellite built in Europe Isotope Spectrometer) • Photek detectors are used in its sensitive • Photek detector used to measure cameras - can see much more than any direction and energy of cosmic rays previous X-ray satellite 5 www.photek.co.uk

  6. Space Science Projects- TIMED Mid Course Space Experiment • Global Ultra Violet Imager (GUVI) is a far- • Photek detector is a key part of ultraviolet scanning imaging spectrograph the spectrograph on the MSX- • Photek detectors provide data for analysis of UVISI Instrument hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen composition • Used to detect phenomena in mid and thermal behavior of the lower to upper atmosphere providing Thermosphere (upper atmosphere) information about gas concentrations 6 www.photek.co.uk

  7. Space Science Projects- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) • UVIT Detectors • Due to launch on the ASTROSAT spacecraft • ASTROSAT aims are to investigate the origin and mechanism of radiation emissions in active galactic nuclei. • UVIT aims to provide flux calibrated images of the sky in the far-UV, near-UV and visible spectral regions 7 www.photek.co.uk

  8. Photo Detection and Imaging Sensors- Key Characteristics A photodetector is a device that detects and amplifies photons and generates either an image or an electronic signal Image Intensifier 8 www.photek.co.uk

  9. Technology Evolution Three Components of a Detector q Photocathode to convert photons to electrons q Have just completed SPRINT project with University of Leicester to model ideal photocathode structures for main products q Processing of photon electrons, normally amplification q 2 nd December start of SPRINT project with University of Leicester to investigate new materials and technologies for electron multiplication devices q Conversion of electrons to useful signal (either electrical or optical) q Started end of October SPRINT project with University of Leicester to demonstrate proof of concept of new techniques for large format enhanced spatial and temporal resolution devices 9 www.photek.co.uk

  10. Photek’s SPRINT Journey q Photek has a strong history of developing and producing detectors for Space Missions q Has good working relations with many universities, including University of Leicester Space Research Centre q Introduced to SPRINT by University of Leicester q Identified projects which would enhance technology being deployed on Space Projects which would also provide benefit for Photek products in other market segments 10 www.photek.co.uk

  11. Why SPRINT? q Photek is a relatively small company q Although has a relatively large R&D team, does not possess the resources to work on all projects that would like to q SPRINT project gives access to University resources and skills that can enhance development work at Photek q Will lead to new generations of products that are useful to the Space Science sector q Improvements on these products can be applied to products in all other markets currently serviced by Photek q Improved products may open opportunities in new market segments 11 www.photek.co.uk

  12. Comparison to Other Programmes q Photek has a long history of working with Universities q SPRINT works well for relatively short, well-defined projects q Although there is a cost to the company, it is low cost for the output of the project q Enables us to access resources that would otherwise be out of reach q Photek has participated in 6 KTP projects in the last 10 years – these are better for longer term projects where a new capability needs to be embedded in the company q Only surprise with SPRINT was that the application process was quite easy, some other programmes we have participated in have had a considerably more exacting process associated with them 12 www.photek.co.uk

  13. Future Aspirations q Photek has a strategic plan to increase its revenues from circa £7M per annum currently to greater than £10M per annum within the next 5 years q To accomplish this, Photek needs to retain its current customers and attract new customers in new market segments q Product and Process developments are key to the strategic plan q Work from the SPRINT projects will be used in production items within the next two years and will be in support of the goal to introduce one new significant product per year 13 www.photek.co.uk
