to obtain the best information we can in order to make effective wildlife management decisions for sustainability
GRRB is not a party to the PCMA or HMP but have an implementation role to collect and report on Gwich’in harvest data
Methods Results (2013-2014) Interim Results (Collected Nov 2014)
GRRB GRRB RRC RRC Interviewer Interviewer Applies for funding Hires community Conducts surveys with Interviewer harvesters (3 communities) Data entry Door prizes Financial reporting Returns survey forms to GRRB Reports any PC harvest to PCMB Data management *Note: RRCs use slightly different collection methods but have same objectives and follow the strategic framework cleared by PCMB
PCMB Framework followed: 3 pieces of info needed for harvest estimate No. of active and key harvesters (harvester list) No. who participated in survey No. of animals reported harvested Data concerning Porcupine caribou harvest provided to PCMB Stats can be calculated for any species of interest Credit: ENR
Potential: 460 responses/year ◦ 230 active ungulate harvesters X 2 survey rounds Actual: 197 ◦ 87 interviews_Round 1 ◦ 110 interviews_Round 2 Response rate varied ◦ Harvester list accuracy ◦ New interviewers, Credit: unknown ◦ Low interest or availability of harvesters, ◦ If did not go out or not successful perhaps did not report

More bank erosion, sand Bull-dominated harvest bars ◦ Peel River Didn’t participate b/c no caribou ◦ Midway air strip Summer-cold; fall-too warm Slumps growing back ◦ Bonnetplume Flats,James Crk ◦ Large alder trees (>4ft) Animals around longer this fall (eagle, bear, swans, gulls) FB page ◦ Want info on grizzlies Predator abundance ◦ Caribou locations! ◦ Same-less wolves ◦ Same-more bears Same or less otter
GRRB’s survey form used as a template Data is statistically sound (thanks to parties!) Getting the word out! ◦ CIMP meeting; presented with an interviewer ◦ PCMB presented at the North American caribou conference Credit: J Boxwell, 2012
Uncertain or inconsistent funding Capacity – Time! Low harvester participation Credit: Yukon Government
Continue to work with RRCs Promote participation o What works for each RRC o Use database created in 2014 to make data entry consistent and accessible Continue to use best practices for data collection for most accurate results Credit: GRRB: J. Boxwell
Maintain Green Zone designation Continue to promote bull-dominate harvests Credit: J. Carnogursky, 2012
ERRC comments ◦ Appreciates the flexibility and recognition of local TK ◦ Useful resource for ‘family-mentorship’ program ◦ Add local contacts and photos to make document more accessible to youth ◦ Include video/digital resources ◦ Add more info on caribou predators (bear, wolves, eagles)
GRRB Member comments ◦ Reinforce that each cow not harvested may result in 23 more caribou in10 yrs, ◦ Include both NWT and YG hunting regulations and ensure educator is providing info on both, ◦ Reinforce new NWT regs on caliber and muzzle velocity General ◦ Good info for new harvesters – ex. parasites, safety
