The mouth is an indicator of general health. An unhealthy mouth will effect a person both physically and mentally. A healthy mouth: Allows enjoyable eating of regular nutritious meals Promotes confidence in appearance, eating and speaking Prevents oral infections that may affect general health and wellbeing Permits clear speech Allows for good development in children
•Brush teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. Smear for under 3’s and pea sized amount for over 3’s. •Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks, try keep to meal times •Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend .
4-6 years = 5 sugar cubes max (19 grams) 7-10 years = 6 sugar cubes max (24 grams) From 11 years = 7 sugar cubes max (30 grams)

Staff training is also available on oral health basics and using the resources www.dentalhealthpromotion.net This is complimented by an online support hub that has been specially designed to use on PowerPoint style systems with the children or children can use the programme themselves on Pc or tablet.

Although aimed at dental practices it is a very useful tool for other health practitioners to ensure that they are providing the best oral care plans for their client group.
