OpenOakland Impact OpenOakland’s impact has grown significantly since we were founded as an open government innovation and civic hacking group in mid-2012. Since then, we’ve: ● Created an engaging, inspiring, (free) and safe space for makers, technologists, community leaders, students, educators, and public servants to come together and build things 50 hack nights a year! ● Convened 3 successful CityCamps, bringing together hundreds of residents for one of the region’s most interdisciplinary, fun, free, and prolific events (Did you know that Telegraph Academy, one of the top bootcamps for people of color, was born at CityCamp?) ● Become the go-to civic innovation advisory group for the City of Oakland and its key staff on tech solutions for streamlining projects and processes that get information into the hands of Oaklanders more quickly and easily ● Become one of Code for America’s top flagship brigades, regularly recognized and sought out for our advising on projects, organizational management and teambuilding, growing partnerships with the City and other public agencies, and our diversity ● Influenced state policy: our OpenDisclosure project has attracted 3 other Brigades to form OpenCalifornia, now serving as an influential tool for state legislators ● Taken our civic hack night model out of City Hall and brought it to the people: our 2015 National Day of Civic Hacking event attracted dozens of community members in 5 of Oakland’s 7 city districts, with participation from 3 City Councilmembers and their staff
