  3. Background • Case- based reasoning is a “problem solving methodology” which allows the problem solver to use past situations (cases) to in order to solve their current situation (Bichindartiz, 2011, p.75). Allowing for the proclamation of case-based reasoning in the health sciences online will add to eHealth’s efforts in improving health and healthcare. • Following the HITECH Act, a Physician Workflow study was funded by the National Center for Health Statistics in which 74% of physicians who took part in the survey experienced enhanced overall patient care due to the use of an electronic health record system (Jamoom et. al., 2012, p.4). • It is determined that the use of electronic health record systems are innovative and valuable tools for the general public. Being such, the use of an eHealth system which allows medical personal and civilians to use case-based reasoning and to interpret electronic health records would be beneficial to future health trials. • Miotto &Weng (2015) found that the case-based reasoning method can be beneficial in identifying eligible patients for clinical trials based on electronic health records (p. 141). 3

  4. Purpose The main goals of this project are to: • Create an online community for case-based reasoning in health science • Identify potential users of the online system • Understand the needed system requirements • Define the process of designing the system • Present information about the proposed system through the use of an ePortfolio • Demo a high level prototype of the proposed system while explaining its different functionalities 4

  6. Researcher Shirley is a researcher for the American Heart Association. She is interested in finding general information about heart failure in older men and women. For her proposed study, she needs to understand the different factors that contribute to heart failure in people above the age of 70. Due to the deadline of her assignment, Shirley is also interested in finding a study design that she could replicate in her own study. Users that are researchers in the field of health science are interested in obtaining information on current and past studies to provide background knowledge on their current research topic. Through the use of the Health CBR system, Shirley will be able to find previous studies related to heart failure in the Document Center . From the different case-based studies, she should be able to find one that fits her proposed study methodology. 7. Patient Ray has a very rare disease called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) which gives him trouble breathing. Since there are various treatments out there for his disease, he was hoping to find some more information on which treatment will work best for him. He’s looking to reach out to others with the disease to hear what they think. Any information that he could find would be helpful for him to understand his disease more. Patients are interested in obtaining new information about their current health status. They may want to communicate with others to discuss different health conditions they are currently having and see if it coincides with others. The Health CBR system would be a great platform to give Ray the information he is looking for. He would be able to speak with other patients within the Forum page. He could search for his disease in the multiple posts from other users and communicate with them about different treatments. *Photo by Pablo with Creative Commons license. 7

  8. Student Josephine is currently taking classes as a biology major on a pre-med track. For her courses, she tries to stay up to date on the most interesting health science topics. She knows that networking with professionals in the healthcare field could potentially boost his opportunities of obtaining a future internship or job shadowing opportunity. Health science students are concerned with learning different techniques and obtaining an understanding of concepts related to their coursework. In addition, they are interested in connecting with distinguished individuals in their desired field. The Events page within the Health CBR system is a seamless medium for Josephine to find updated information on future conferences and networking events. She would also be able to connect with health professionals by sending them messages or commenting on their posts. *Photo by University of Alaska Anchorage 8

  9. Medical Professional George works extremely long hours at a medical clinic, caring for trauma patients. In such a fast pace environment, his job requires him to be able to find the quickest solutions to any circumstances that may occur. He needs to be able to verify that the procedures that he completes are appropriate for the given situation. Medical professionals evaluate and diagnose a number of cases on any given day. Their jobs do not leave much room for error. The ability to communicate with other medical professionals in a timely manner as well as review previous records and health documents could save lives. The Health CBR system could be seen as a communication tool for George where he can contact other medical professionals within the Forum page. He could also search for any information within the Document Center . *Photo by International Disaster Volunteers 9

  12. System Design A explanation of the system’s design process. CBR Health Community Wireframe 12

  13. Design Process Steps taken to design the system’s prototype website: • Brainstormed potential pages and content needed • Produced a sketch of the homepage • Reimaged sketched wireframe into Auxure (prototype/wireframe software) • Created a wireframe for the homepage, forum, library and profile • Justified appropriate titles and content • Create a Wix website with a page for each wireframe • Adjusted layout and content further 13

  17. Future Plans • Continue to build and design the system and its content further • Identify the best platform for the system to reside • The document uploads and forum would require the use of a secure database • Test the system with potential users • Collaborate with health organizations interested in adding information for a newsletter and future events • Incorporate the use of social media into the site to further extend its reach 17
