National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) • Administered nationally beginning in 2000 by the Center for Postsecondary Research in the Indiana University School of Education • Survey instrument based on empirically confirmed May 16, 2013 – President’s Cabinet “good practices” in undergraduate education • On-line survey instrument with email recruitment • All first-time freshmen and seniors are invited 3

NSSE Benchmark Comparisons • Sets of questions produce benchmark comparisons for five constructs: • Level of Academic Challenge • Active and Collaborative Learning May 16, 2013 – President’s Cabinet • Student-Faculty Interaction • Enriching Educational Experiences • Supportive Campus Environment • Benchmark Comparisons Report present our institution’s results against • All NSSE participating institutions • Institutions within our Carnegie Classification 4 • Institutions in a comparison group we defined ourselves

CPP Defined Comparison Group • Defined for prior two IPEDS reports as • Public institutions about our size • Urban or suburban but not rural • Similar proportion of graduate enrollment, academic May 16, 2013 – President’s Cabinet programs, students living on campus • NSSE participating institutions in this group • CSUs: Fresno, Fullerton, San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Jose • Eastern Michigan, Oakland (MI), Portland State (OR), Wichita State (KS), Kennesaw State (GA), Texas at Arlington, Texas at San Antonio, Cincinnati (OH), Toledo (OH), 5 Wisconsin-Milwaukee (WI)

  6. CPP Participation • Initially in 2005, repeated in 2008 and 2011 • 2011 Overall response rate 22% • Responses from 671 freshmen & 1,966 seniors • Response rates were 22% in 2005 and 28% in 2008 May 16, 2013 – President’s Cabinet 6

Making Connections • Results for 2011 show • Small and mostly positive differences between CPP and other other institutions of our size and type • Small to moderate differences, roughly equal in positive and negative, between CPP and institutions in our Carnegie May 16, 2013 – President’s Cabinet classification • Small to moderate differences, more negative than positive, between CPP and all institutions participating in NSSE 2011 • The most valuable result is the six-year perspective on our own student engagement 7
