Hannover‘s role as Lead City  Lead City in Germany since Sept. 2015  Hannover has been a member since 1983 (Vice President and Executive City), also sister city of Hiroshima  Mayors for Peace Office is assigned to the Lord Mayor‘s International Office  More than 500 members in 16 Federal States  German Mayors for Peace website: www.mayorsforpeace.de 2

Recruiting new members  Membership in Germany exceeds 500  Peace policy is an integral part of local policy  Great attention is paid to issues such as  social justice  peaceful co-existence of people  democratic participation  creating a harmonious local environment • New members focus on the idea of overall peace and abolition of nuclear weapons • New members join mostly because membership is based on voluntary contribution 3

  4. Collection of membership fees  100 € for a flag treated as membership fee for Mayors for Peace  Call for contribution of membership fees in January  Collection of membership fees until March 31st  Collective bank transfer to Hiroshima Secretariat for the present year 4

  5. The Flag Day  The Flag Day is held annually on July 8th  240 member cities participate  Activities in cooperation with NGOs, local peace initiatives, churches, students  Contribution of 100 € in exchange for a flag 5
