1. Gateway at Northside Drive National Call
1. Gateway at Northside Drive Bends Towards Justice Joseph O’Connell, Creative Machines, Tucson, AZ Bends Towards Justice The title of my gateway design comes from a phrase coined by the 19th century preacher Theodore Parker in 1853 to predict the inevitability of abolition: “I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice .” Dr. Martin Luther King Junior paraphrased Parker in four influential speeches between 1965 and 1968, coining a phrase that has since been repeated often: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
