  6. The Facts about mandatory alcohol screening What is it? – a roadside breath screening test to detect impaired drivers giving police the ability to demand a breath sample from any driver they have lawfully stopped, giving grounds to demand a second test, if failed, on an approved screening device Why was mandatory alcohol screening needed? – the previous laws around breath screening tests have not served as a meaningful deterrent to impaired driving Does mandatory alcohol screening reduce impaired driving? – adopted in the great majority of comparable, developed democracies, resulting in significant and sustained reductions in overall road crashes and fatalities Won’t this be a major inconvenience for drivers? – the process does not take any longer than the process drivers face now at existing sobriety checkpoints – most drivers do not have to get out of their cars, the process is routine, quick and causes minimal delay for sober drivers.
